Self Conscious

Hello everybody,
Self Conscious what does that actually mean? I see, well more so hear it used all the time and to me the way people use it seems to make no sense to me. Perhaps they have no idea what it means and are just using it in a way they think it means. Or they are only half using it correctly but the other half of it's meaning is not in there so it partially relates or at least perhaps in some cases but it is misused and they apply it to all or only have a partial meaning of it. Or perhaps the term itself is one of those terms that was thought up and does not have a good name to represent it's actual meaning and leads some people to think it has a much more meaningful and in depth meaning than it actually has.

I am wondering what other people think about this term before I say what I feel about it so I can see what people feel about or how they see it and not just have a discussion about what I said about it.

It means you are conscious of yourself?

Self conciousness is caring way too much what you or others around you think about you, your actions or your opinions.

At least, in my opinion.

Might I ask, what brought this up?

There is this commercial where this stupid lady uses the term and I feel that she is using it incorrectly. I like to look at the meanings of words and terms so I now actually what I am saying though I do not think other people go that in depth into understanding what they say.

The human brain does roughly 50,000,000,000 calculations a second. To the person speaking, it makes perfect sense.

Sometimes, the thoughts and words get mixed up on the track from the brain to the mouth.

And, they sometimes forget that the audience isn't in their brain.

Of course, all of this is redundant because she was reading a script, so it does not apply.

As a general rule, I never trust advertisements.

We don't use words literally though, that's the only thing I'd say. If it were literal it would mean 'aware of the way you behave', I guess without the negative connotations of being shy.

The way I, and most others that I've come across, use the phrase is to mean 'overly self conscious' so, not just aware of what they're doing/ who they are, doing it to the point that it's detrimental to their character. A fair assumption would be to think that the majority of people are aware of themselves.

So I think the meaning of the phrase 'self conscious' has changed over time.

A self awareness that when combined with navel gazing leads to neurosis.

Self-consciousness is an acute sense of self-awareness. It is a preoccupation with oneself, as opposed to the philosophical state of self-awareness, which is the awareness that one exists as an individual being; although some writers use both terms interchangeably or synonymously.

That is pulled straight from Wikipedia. and i found it interesting that the "preoccupation with oneself" is interchanged with the awareness that one exists.

Sorry Zed, but it's probably you using it wrong.

Self-aware is possibly the word you mean to use.
One of the things I already knew that was highlighted immediately when learning other languages was that words' meanings sometimes change when they are put with other words or combined with other words.

That's one reason why languages are so complex, and then you bring in connotations and boom!

This really did not need a thread nor discussion. It's meaning is black and white; being aware of one's self.

Most people are self-conscious to a certain extent. This term is correct and does not imply anything other than being conscious of one's self. Be it what they are wearing, how they are acting, doing certain tasks, or in certain situations (dancing would be common among men).

I do not know how it could be used incorrectly, bar as mistake for subconscious, as it relates to anything one may think of themselves.

it's not that at all.

it's like...an overweight person, fact.
he's self aware of it, simple.
BUT if that person is overly worried about it when with other people, and thinking they're all watching their moves and judging them because of it, that's being self conscious.

No. It is exactly that. The only difference is the degree of awareness.

Wrong. Last time I checked, the brain has 86*10^9 neurons, assuming each neuron was connected to another 1000 neurons, hence 1000 synapses, there is (86*10^13) synapses. Also assuming action potential (electric signal) travels close to the speed of light across the axons at (300,000,000 m/s). Again sensibly assuming each neuron can generate 1000 action potentials per second. That is (86*10^13)*1000, 860 quadrillion calculations per second.

Exactly. The only difference is the one that makes your definition wrong and Spurtung's right.
Since the degree is an essential part of the definition and you somehow left it out.

Personally, when I say I or someone else is self-conscious, I mean we are aware to the point of being paranoid about some feature about ourselves that we feel is flawed. It doesn't matter what other people say, or whatever the reality is if there is one, because we can't stop obsessing over them.

Self Conscious means shy to me. Being shy is awful, it can make your everyday life very difficult.
