If you are asking if should public schools teach religion along with science and or for some sort of moral values I would say no. Especially in countries with freedom of religion. How do you decide which religion to teach first of all. Will they teach of how a god may have been licked out of salt ice by a cow?
I do not find anything wrong by teaching religion as a part of history and what religions have done. But not teaching it as infallible.

I had to quote you here. Do you actually mean teach the kids the real history of religion? The millions killed and still being killed for it? Or are you talking Teach the kids to be bigots and judgmental and to be better then anyone else that is a member of any other religion?

I'm all for god and religion here but most religions bend the truth to fit there purposes. So I would have to say no here sorry.

Ah - yes.

While we're on that tack, we also ought to bring up millions killed by athists ideolegies.
From the French Terror to the Eastern Block.

OR we could consider that kind of argument as contentious loudmouthing.
And penalise it. Severely.

The other day I had a rather similar argument on the other side, so to speak.
It would appear that the opposition on that case was convinced that I had to be a militant atheist.
No-Loudmouthing-For-All alwasys is a difficult concept to grasp for some.

See that's the problem with people who have closed there minds or refuse to accept the fact that there are people in the world that do not believe what they believe. Lets just look at the Spanish Inquisition for example. Look how many of there own country men they maimed killed and tortured for years in the name god.

And then there were the crusades which went on forever against the Muslims and they were another Mono deity religion.

Fact is that most people do not know the history of there own religion. The world is more then 10 thousand years old and Dinosaurs did run free on the earth for thousands of years before we even emerged from the dust/mud puddle or anything else you people believe.

Fact of the matter is that atheists broke all the records last century.

The only contender for a top spot in the megamurder-list on religious grounds in the 20th would be Pakistan. It would be difficult to put Ataturk in that categry: Ataturk was a secularist.

f**king hilarious that prone2die, Captain America, is complaining about religion bending the truth to fit its own needs, and religion being responsible for genocide both today and in history.

Teaching religion in schools is not about converting children, its about making them aware of the customs and cultures of different people around the world. Religion isn't about creating fanatics (every religion has their group of psycho fanatics) its about giving hope and support to people. If someone is going through a tough time they can turn to religion for help, support and rehabilitation. I would much rather people do this than committing suicide or something just as stupid. Religion is always wrongly linked with war and death, it is never the cause and never will be.

Though it depends on where you are and who is teaching it. This question is seeming to not have an actual focus because this question changes a bit upon where you ask it. In the U.K. there is already a religious class and it seems like it teaches just about the religions and may cover a bunch of different ones. In a small class that does not cancel out any other subjects. So the people from there are going to see it a bit differently than in the U.S. In the U.S. there is not a religious studies class in public schools. When putting religion into public schools is talked about here basically it means Christianity trying to teach it instead of science saying creationism instead of evolution. And trying to teach it as morals.

So it is a big difference depending on where you ask so that is why some of the answers seem to conflict with people because the whole notion behind it is different in different places. You say it is not about converting children maybe it is not from where you are but from where I am yes it is.

Yes it should. How would you know about other religions ? if it wasnt taught at school, Kids will grow up knowing nothing about other religions. This can cause many problems in a free country where many different religions are outspread.

That doesn't surprise me seeing as the US is 100 years behind Britain in terms of average intelligence and common sense. Religion should be taught not forced and thats the way it should be.

"Should religion be taught in school?" no "Should religions be taught in school?" yes, like it or not religions are part of what creates the bonds within tribes/communities, it becomes a consistant that everyone within that tribe/community agrees on thus strengthing social bonds which isn't a bad thing, it is only bad when all that is taught is one religion. Kids should be taught about all religions not taught to follow only one.

Really? and what do you base that on? I mean so far America has given you Windows, they were the first to land on the moon (And still Britan doesn't have anything close to a space program), they gave us the big mac (which in itself is an awesome acheivement) and what is Britains contribution to society? some old granny who gets paid to wave at people and football hooliganism? yeah so britain is 100 years advanced in average intelligence and common sense like a fish is advanced in quantum physics and how to ride a bike

you google it or, better yet, read a book or two (or ten)

[rant]
what happens when you feel you need/want to know something? you research it yourself ... you get a lot more from it if you look up different sources, evaluate different perspectives and then make your own opinion ...
the attitude that everything must be taught in schools and come summarised and ready to "absorb" is creating a generation (or two) of parrots capable of repeating formulas word for word but incapable of any measure of lateral thinking...

Stephen Hawkins is British, though you probably didn't know that. Britain gave us America, or had you forgotten? I said average intelligence and common sense, the space program is hardly something that equates to average intelligence. Of course America has its share of insanely smart people, but on average, most American's are backwards in thinking and are 100 years behind Britain. Also if you're going to make a point about violence in football games actually know something about it (it rarely happens and there are much worse places for it too.) Wouldn't you rather a few football fans fight eachother rather than.. lets say... school shootings?
