So forums started about 1994 but before that what did everyone do to troll? was it just saying Emily Bronty books are crap 50 years ago or just complaining about a program on BBC on "Points of View" 20 years ago, was that the original trolling? has trolling always actually existed but just became more obvious with the advent of technology?
1994 is before my time, but before I discovered interwebs I played PS2, PC & SEGA Megadrive, school toilet graffiti (as jtj mentioned), burn things in the garden, misbehaved at school & never listened.
God I must've been a little shit.
back in the late 80's & early 90's, me & friends used to do a lot of toilet paper, egg's, ring the doorbell & run & hide. Then of course we got caught 1 time & had to spend a saturday afternoon cleaning it up.
Knock down ginger - AKA knock on random peoples doors and run away, thinking back i have no idea why my childish teenage self done so but it was pretty funny. All to just get random people to walk to their front door, it was kinda like trolololo for us while we leg it up the street -.-
Then we grew some balls and use to really troll people by either playing garden gnomes where a group of you had to just freeze frame in a random shape or pull a funny face, last one to move wins... that also turned into sexual garden gnomes and many other random trolls like asking: "Is your washing machine still running?" "ummm yeah.." "then you better go catch it" trolololol
Then we sat in our rooms all day playing R unescape and Call of duty / pr0n
Yeah. Bathroom stalls, TP or egg someones house, ding dong ditch, spay paint. The only thing that has changed is the speed of the return. With old school trolling you had to be patient.
I live in Ireland and think what you call "ding dong ditch" is knocking on someone door and then doing a runner? we use to do that too but we called it "Knick Knack", one of our favourite games was to get someone to do the "knick knack" and we'd all be standing at the gate and when the person doing the "knick knack" knocked on the door we'd all close the gate to slow them down and we'd run away while they'd get caught
Kids are and always will be master 'trolls', when we were little we used to play a game in assembly where we had to say the word 'grandma' louder and louder until someone stopped us. Everyone in the hall would be laughing and we spoiled many an assembly like this.
Also, 'gullible' isn't in the dictionary...
It was just called playing around.
As to 'what was the original trolling', I'm sure that trying to be a funny dick has been around since cave times.
