Heaven should feel like that brief period when you wake up in the morning, your bed is the perfect temperature and "fluffiness" and you begin to recall the dream you had last night. It's that moment just before you become aware of all the responsibilities and tasks you have to fulfill.

Heaven is such an uninteresting concept. I prefer the idea in some Eastern cultures of attaining a state of "oneness" with the universe, where an individual after much meditation and self-discipline is able to cast off the "illusion" of reality and know the true nature of the universe. In Buddhism this is called "Nirvana" which is reached by casting aside desires; however the Hindu version (which I find to be more interesting) is called "Brahman" and can only be attained through over many lifetimes of reincarnation and balance of karma. It is said to be akin to "learning the ultimate truth" and the "epitome of peace of mind"

A state of being "one" with the universe...sounds kind of accurate to me, when you take into account the fact that our bones will all one day break down into dust and become the soil which nurtures a new generation of plant life.

I don't know, I think something can happen.
The mere fact that something came from nothing ie: the universe, that gives me a little hope that unimaginable things can happen.
Not religious btw.

that's the never ending human pride, to think this can't be just it as if we're too important to cease being.

Yea I think you took that way out of context. No Human pride involved here, just stating that Unexplainable things happened at the beginning, why can't unexplainable things happen in the end?
Not just as humans, everything. I never even mentioned humanity.

but that already presumes a sense of continuum, as you are given more chances to set things straight (or to f**k up some more).

if you talk about reincarnation, that already rules out the possibility of afterlife, it's only reliving.

there's something that doesn't add up with that philosophy, though, where are the extra souls coming from? because humanity has been increasing in numbers for a while.

yes, I know I took only a small portion of your initial post.

but it's not "the end", it's "one's end", so it's not that easy to compare that with the creation of the universe.

Depends on what reincarnation you are talking about. If it is just people reincarnating as people then yes where did all these new souls/essences come from or do they happen to divide a bit and you are not as whole as you once were. Or if you go from people to different animals or from animals to people then that would work better in that theory. Though if reincarnation is possible who is to say that you just are limited to Earth perhaps you are reincarnated on some other planet far away, or even possibly in another universe.

You're going to regret that one...
Are you ready for an eternity of "Do your own damn dishes, you slob!"?

Personally, I buy into the whole 'Heaven and Hell are states of mind' idea. We know great joy, and we know great sadness. Sometimes we coast up on a great high, and sometimes we drag ourselves through misery.

Either way, "This too shall pass." Heaven and Hell are states of mind, but so is neutrality. Whether you're religious, or not (like me), we all aim to get back onto the standard path; it allows you to learn the lessons from big events, focus on the future, and handle situations as they arise. Constant joy seems like a good thing, but eventually it breeds complacency and amplifies any negativity; meanwhile, constant negativity is quite obviously damaging.

So I guess I don't really believe in a physical heaven. A place where everything is perfect all the time doesn't sit right with me. Rather, a balance between 'heaven and hell', or positive and negative just seems more appropriate.

Which is one of many reasons to hate religion, fear mongering. There's as much evidence to suggest it's true as there is a giant turkey monster that created the universe so it could nibble up planets for food.

I can't think of a single interesting person who would actually end up in heaven, of whichever religious flavour you care to believe in, so at least in Hell, the company and conversation would be better.
