Ok so I got a problem I wonder if anyone can advise me what to do next
I took my car in for a service to a garage I've never been in before but it was my local garage 2miles away.
I requested and asked if the filters get changed I.e oil, fuel and air they said yes and I left the car with them
I picked it up with a £125 bill for the labour and parts..
I had a strong feeling something was up so I took my car into another garage and asked the. To see if my filters had been changed. They looked it over and said NO the filters are old they never got changed.
So I'm £125 down for work they said they did and didn't do it. I've looked on the Internet for advice I can't find a problem that's the same as mine. I'm going to go back to the first garage today and give them a piece of my kind but before I do is there anyway I can get my money back?
Any help would be appreciated

The receipt. That is the business contract between you and them. If the receipt says that they charged you for the filters then they have legally obligated themselves to change them.

Go to Trading Standards, with your bill. Probably more effectiv than speaking your mind.

Did the 2nd garage change the filters?
If they did, did you watch?

They showed me the fuel filter how it was slightly croded saying if the filters was changed and new this wouldn't happen overnight.
I got them to put new ones I and only charged me £10 inc labour I think a good jester for me to go to them from now on.
But yeah I did see a filter.
Ill go in today and question there work if that gets me nowhere I go to trading standards?

Go SEE 'em. There usually is a buro of some kind near the Civic Centre. It will have a bunch of posters about loansharks, the current Hot Item.
Never give a burocrat a reason to delay, and writing letters is an invitiation for prevarication.

Uhm, OK. Understandable, but perhaps not quite the thing to do in an advice-thread.

Fuel filters they take out to show you.
All they had to do to get you to keep coming back was show you a used fuel filter.
But you're so sure the first place ripped you off that you won't consider that the 2nd may have.

If you can't change filters, you don't deserve to own a car. It's not exactly rocket science.
I don't get people who have vehicles that they have no idea how to maintain.

It is really hard to find a garage that you can trust nowadays, so many are happy to take as much money from you as possible for as little work as they can get away with. Pretending to change filters (air/oil/fuel/aircon) is an easy way for them to take you for £50+ for nothing. The question is, if they didn't bother changing your filters, how sure are you they even bothered to change your oil or even do anything other than take your money?
The advice above is good. Go direct to the boss, tell him you were not happy and have had another reputable garage check your car within 24 hours of the 'service' (do not name them) and explain they are willing to give evidence that the filters you were charged for were not changed.
Explain that you are prepared to go to Trading Standards and the local press/radio about this unless they fully service the car in front of you for free or return your money.
That usually works.

If it was something that needed specialist knowledge, fair enough. I wouldn't expect someone to do a top end rebuild if they had no prior knowledge of engines, for example. Changing filters is something that a chimp could do. Paying someone else to do it is throwing money away.

Don't worry I'm sure he pays money for something other people consider a waste.
Some people have told me it's dumb to eat at burger places since I can make a burger myself. Comes down to opinion, I suppose.
But I'm totally with you, I'll have the mechanics work on my car tyvm.

It isn't always feasible to do your own maintenance. The last place I rented had a horrible parkade with minimally-sized stalls. The rental agreement explicitly forbade tenants from working on their cars in their stalls, and I didn't have a lot of storage space to keep a pair of ramps and a drain pan regardless.

If the filters weren't changed, you should have just gone straight back to the old place and asked for them to make it right, but because you instead had a new place install new filters, well... How can you prove anything when your car no longer has the filters you originally had?

Here's an Idea, place a mark either with a permanent marker or nail or anything you can get your hands on on the oil filter. this way you can check the filter BEFORE you leave the service station.

while im used to working on diesel. (mostly heavy equipment) if someone brings me the parts needed. I (on average charge) $20 an hr. $15 if were related or i like ya. Or if i owe ya money or a favor free or for other services rendered.
what you had done should not have have taken more than 30 mins. with the majority of that time waiting for all the old oil to drain completely. & turning the nut on the fuel filter.
Yes a lot of jokers have given mechanics a bad name. what i would STRONGLY ADVISE. Is if any of your friends are training for this trade. Or you know of someone who you half way get along with. (in this trade) I would find out what your good at & possibly trade trade's so to speak. (for instance. I changed someone brakes a few months ago to take a look at my computer)
granted paying $$ should be sufficient. But if you have a personal relationship with someone, they will usually take the time to look at yours with more care & not try to bullshit you into getting things done just to bring in some extra $$.

lol if your gonna take the time to crawl under there & do that. mite as well do it your self. lol.
But yes i have advised people to do this when having other more major repairs done.. (rear end or engine or tranny work for instance.) Look at the bolts & see if there is excessive grease/oil build up on them.. If so chances are a wrench hasn't touched it.

i can't speak to the law in the UK, but a common practice here in the US is to request that the garage give you the old parts that they replace. they have to give you the old parts back and some very savvy people will do something like make a mark or draw on the part before they take it in. good luck buddy i really hope you get this worked out.
