"These experiments showed that we have established a sophisticated, direct communication linkage between brains," Nicolelis said in a statement. "Basically, we are creating what I call an organic computer."

Very cool.
I wonder how long it will be before a military application is derived from this research? I am surprised it was even allowed into the public sector.
I guess there is a Borg reference to be had here, but I can't come up with one.

If we kept it to animals only, in what way would it militarily help over what machines do?

This is definitely an area of science worth focussing on. I've always had trouble with rats that don't think alike. Now that these sick f**ks have wasted their time making some kind of useless hive-mind, i can truly see a brighter tomorrow on the horizon.

It's things like this that makes science both amaze me and scare the f**k out of me. Not that that's a bad thing. Plenty of good has come from the insane stuff people have thought up over the years.

Does anybody know how they send the 'thoughts', or do they just use a trigger in the rats' brains as a marker and send another trigger to the other rats? I don't get how they could send senses. Like they don't send an image, do they?
You can probably guess that I know little about this shit. It's interesting though, I guess we'll see where it leads in a decade or two.
(could be amazing for computer games, let alone more important things!)

All "thoughts" are, are electrical impulses in the brain. They just put electrodes on top of the head or even on/in the brain, these send a signal via the wires which is digitised by a router and sent via the internet to the router connected to the other rat which converts the digitised signal back to, or near to, the original electrical signal from the first rat, letting the second rat know what it's thinking.

That may be true for you, but my thoughts come from some little person who lives in my head and talks to me.

You don't even know their name. Rude.
So they can send abstract electrical signals (like thoughts)? This whole thingy is scary cool.

Possibly, they're nowhere near that kind of capability yet, and I doubt it would even be useful. I'm by no means an expert and I'm only guessing what I'm about to say, but I imagine they can only send signals in which every persons brain has commonality in recognising. These most likely be signals from instinctual stimulation, for example the rats were working for water, recognising when they failed to get water, and then trying again. All of which are task based thoughts. I highly doubt they could recognise the perpetual thoughts each individual has all the time, all though they know we're thinking.

Yeah, I understand. That's sort of what I was asking, I guess. Like do they actual send thoughts or just a signal that says "this rat is thinking something" and the other rat uses that as a trigger because, lets face it, rats probably don't think too much- so if a rat is thinking, it's going to be about the task at hand. To be fair, though, I don't see why they should be limited to this level of simplicity, I mean, little more than 100 years ago people thought flight (at least, sustained flight) would be impossible for the forseeable future, now look at us. Technology always seems to bound forward, now quicker than ever.
I wish I took an interest in any of this as a child. It would be good to know what was going on and be able to have an informed opinion. Now I think I'm too far out of the loop to even scratch the surface.

No one who ever observed how village commuities collectively delay illness or get it ill,
how groups of girls ( with access to birth control ) get pregnant en masse,
or how widspread social upheavals throughout time - in the absence of communicattion, without awareness of eachothers very existence - happn across cultures, can avoid the sdimple coclusion:
humans ARE collective. Just like a bee-swarm.
The individual is NOTHING, the collective is everything.
