Carly McKinney, a 23 year old Colorado Public School Teacher, tweeted photos of herself drinking, stripping, smoking questionable substances, and posing semi-nude for her followers.
In a mock trial, Socrates is tried and found guilty for corruption of youth and impiety. In modern times, he escapes the death penalty and jail time and is fined.
I can't help but feel that underlying issues in these stories are related.
I advocate for freedom of expression and open culture. Teachers are stewards of the public trust and as such are held to our highest standards of esteem. They should be free to have their own lives independent of their occupation, but because of public position be required to practice discretion.
I have evaluated the content of crunk_bear's twitter account, and her photos (which remain without staff edit) in the other appreciation thread are by far the raciest images tweeted. Many sites are dramatically adding black bars and blurs in displaying the content, which I feel pandered to my initial outrage towards Carly.
Our greatest ideals for the qualifications of a teacher perhaps are insulting to the regular people who end up educating the youth in America. When we create a society where the highest rewards of wealth and power are offered to those people who have the most important jobs, we will see some amazing teachers enter into the sphere of social media and responsible digital relationship with their students. Until then we are stuck with people like Carly Crunk Bear.
Impulsively, I would suggest to her that she take a lesson from Socrates and switch out the booze for some hemlock juice. But really, the failing is in not having created an infrastructure of teachers working together to implement layers of privacy for their sociocultural digital lives.
Should she lose her job? Maybe... but I fear that it sets the same dangerous precedents of ignorance and intolerance. Instead, she herself should be educated to utilize technology more effectively and learn from this little mishap.
Instead, she will get fired because she was stupid enough to infer that she brought drugs on to the school campus... if it wasn't for that single tweet, she would perhave have a really good chance at the wrongful termination suit which is sure to ensue in the following weeks.
I thought about a teacher I was attracted to in high school. I wonder how corrupted I would be if I were to log on to a computer (which my parents should be monitoring my behavior on anyway) and find a picture of said teacher doing a topless twerk... as well as openly discussing consumption of alcohol and marijuana. I would have enjoyed looking at said image during intimate moments alone... so if that constitutes corruption to you, then yes I would have been corrupted.

The drugs put a different slant on it. People might be able to overlook the racy photos but nobody wants a druggy teaching their kids.
^^ This - not even druggy parents want druggy teachers.
Someone needs to take the blame for why their children are stupid - it has nothing to do with the drugs / alcohol consumed while pregnant. Nor the lack of early childhood learning because your child was raised in front of the television rather than on good parenting skills.
However... I'm a Nurse - Does that mean i shouldn't be playing a game which involves me taking Xanax and killing other people? (well, shooting them in the head, leading to a possible 5 hour hospital stay after-which you are 100% back to normal). This game and the internet in general, promotes a sedentary lifestyle which often results in Obesity, Diabetes, Heart Disease. Should i be fired for that? Afterall, i'm not doing a good job of health promotion. lol
After marijuana has been legal a few years, people won't mind the potheads teaching their kids either.

Don't let anyone find out you play here, Nurse Vixxen. It's your ass for sure. (Or at least your career.)
as the saying goes "when it's online, it's there forever" ... and so your online life can become more public that your public life
if she's too dumb to understand that she should keep her personal life personal and those photos would come back to haunt her then she's too dumb to teach ...
As a man, I'd love these kind of photos when cute girl posting their boobs.
After considerations, I also won't be troubled if her kinds is teaching my sons and daughters.
But if my offsprings would ever think her ways are "cool" "yolo" shits, I will definitely berate them not to follow and copy this human's stupid ways ever.

Just a case of professionalism, really. In and out of work, public servants are expected to maintain a standard of professionalism, to ensure that their relationships with clients and colleagues are not negatively affected.
It doesn't make her incompetent. She may very well be quite a fantastic teacher; but you can't expect parents to entrust her with the well being of their children. It would seriously damage the teacher-parent, and teacher-student relationships.
I seem to remember a group of doctors being dismissed after posting pictures of themselves planking in and around the hospital in which they worked.
It all simply comes down to how public figures are 'supposed to appear' to the people they serve. Personally, I find the whole attitude antiquated. But there you have it. It's just a fact, for now at least.

I would prefer if someone of integrity teaches my children. Such people tend to cost at least 120-200k/year.
This teacher can give a good lesson to a high school kid though; Act poorly on the interwebs and you can't even get a crappy job.
As far as drugs and sex ... even if she taught at the caliber of socrates, people would freak out on her.

It is antiquated. We want to protect our kids, but if we aren't in open dialogue with them about drugs and sex and girls like carly in the first place we are already failing at parenting.
Funny thing ... Before those doctors .. I had no Idea what planking was ... and before Carly ... I had no Idea what a twerk was ... well .. I knew what it was but didn't know what to call it.

Really?
I had any number of people of both high integrity & competence teach me when I was younger, and I know for a fact that none of them made anything approaching 120-200k a year.
Even in adult life (especially in adult life), I'm not sure I see the association between integrity and pay grade.
I am half way through my teacher training and one of the things I have found hard is separating my personal life from my teaching. I kind of feel sorry for the girl.
