Anyone know the numbers on how many Americans keep guns because of the ''documentary'' Red Dawn like the fella on the previous page.
If I were american, I definately would. Patrick Swayze is my favourite scientist.
According to a Wikipedia entry "Approximately 33% of the U.S population has armed themselves in preparation of a foreign invasion as depicted in the documentary movie Red Dawn".
I am missing something here?Is there a Red Dawn doc and hes not on about a 80's war movie..or did it arm some of the nation(Did us Brits arm ourselves after say Snatch to ward of Gypies)

If guns are for sport shooting, this should be in the sports sub.
If guns are for protection, this should be in politics and law. If guns are to overthrow corrupt governments, you should be in jail.
yes, because the government should NEVER be scared of the people whose life it has complete control over right? The government should be allowed to do what ever it likes when ever and how ever it likes, there should be no way to keep it in check. Spoken like a true idiot, thanks.
no, im not saying the U.S. government is at that point yet, but i do acknowledge one day it will be, just like the founding fathers did, and i would like to keep the civil war II to be kept with in the U.S. and not have another country come in and help so then we be in debt to them for ever or to have them force anything onto us. (which would cause more problems)
i said i was done here, but thats just too stupid to by pass.....coming from a guy who wants to talk about logic sure as hell doesn't have much himself.....
If you dont like how your government operates, step up and serve your country by representing the people better. Democracy requires effort, not vigilante's.
And you call me stupid.
lol, i would never make it into politics. Once a government reaches the point i stated nobody would be able to run for government, the people at the top would just hand pick them....so yes i do indeed call you stupid.
there's right and there's wrong, you gotta do one or the other If you do the one and your living you do the other you might be walking around but your dead as a beaver hat
lol.. so predictably pathetic. You will say anything so long as it justifies you keeping your ickle toys.
Well folks, thats it, I've left the game. To those of you who think of me as a friend, I thank you and wish you all the best. Enjoy the game, and take care.

Entropy is not stupid. At all. He is one of the fairest, and most level minded people in Torn in my opinion, but he is completely wrong about the necessity of citizens to be armed, but we should not blame him. He is a product of his environment, and he has had a lifetime of indoctrination and ideology against private gun ownership, thus he and most others in the UK and Europe believe that it is best to trust in their governments to always lookout for their best interest, whereas we in the USA have had a different kind of indoctrination and ideology presented to us (well, at least until recently).
I am willing to allow those of different beliefs to have their way, so long as they do not infringe on my beliefs and ways, and that is basically the core idea of the USA's Second Amendment.

Sorry to hear about your friends son. Sad that he died, but his death has little to do with guns and more to do with that actions of humans. He could have just as easily been killed while crossing the street, but I doubt that there would be a public outcry to eliminate streets...
My personal beliefs are such that I believe that governments are only kept in check by people who are in a position to resist governmental abuse of power. Guns enhance the populations ability to influence their governments, which is why the founders of the US Constitution affirmed the rights of its citizens to bare arms.
"A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."
You see, most American's have been brought up with at least some inkling that these words exist. There is great debate as to the actual or intended meaning of these words. The words have been twisted by both sides in the debate as to their true meaning, but as of this moment in time the Constitution seems to be pretty clear that the "right to bear arms shall not be infringed." Recent court cases in the USA have also recently been ruled in favor of this belief. The Constitution is considered to be a "living" document, which essentially means that the interpretation is open to debate, and it is open to change. Time will tell if we in the USA will continue to have our rights to bare arms uninfringed.
As for your question of "if things go your way", I can only answer that I would rather have a gun and not need it, then not have a gun and need it.

"The most foolish mistake we could possibly make would be to allow the subject races to possess arms. History shows that all conquerors who have allowed their subject races to carry arms have prepared their own downfall by so doing. Indeed, I would go so far as to say that the supply of arms to the underdogs is a sine qua non for the overthrow of any sovereignty. So let's not have any native militia or native police. German troops alone will bear the sole responsibility for the maintenance of law and order throughout the occupied Russian territories, and a system of military strong-points must be evolved to cover the entire occupied country." --Adolf Hitler

ok, I can do that too.
"Why of course the people don't want war. Why should some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece? Naturally the common people don't want war neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country."

Im not going to argue with you. Have a great day though.
no argument there, you were only to tell us what is socialism and why do you think Obama is a socialist.
but since you can't/won't I can only infer you're one of those people that just talk without actually realizing what they are saying and still think they know it all, of course.
good day to you too.
Im not sure where the socialism thing came from nor does it have anything to do with being a gun enthusiast. If youve asked me before now i must have missed it. Ill play your game though, here we go :
First, the definition of socialism.
Any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods.
Second, why obama is a socialist.
Look at what parts of the private sector that the government has taken over or gained some sort of ownership since obama has taken office.
The auto industry
The mortgage industry
The healthcare industry to some extent
The banking industry
The student lending industry (the government totally pushed out all private lenders)
Then we get to the redistribution of wealth. No one can deny he wants this. Since Obama has become president, payments such as welfare, social security, and unemployment benefits have been approximately half of the growth in personal income. This comes on top of raising taxes on anyone who makes over 250k a year. That is redistribution of wealth.
Next, he is very fond of his fathers ideologies. His father was a confirmed socialist and even wrote a paper titled "Problems with our socialism."
Both of his brothers are marxist, of which one he said is the person who made him the proudest.
Bill Ayers. Enough said.
There are many more reasons i believe he is, but i dont feel like going through it all.

Hey genius, I pointed out that your argument for keeping guns in case you needed to overthrow your government was not only undemocratic but actually met the criteria to be called terrorism. You shifted the goalposts to make yourself look less like a Timothy McVeigh style lunatic, completely oblivious of the fact that if the government had reached your new milestone for revolution, you have already failed your country by not getting involved and saving it in a democratic method.
The truth is you will keep shifting them all day every day so long as you can in some way justify keeping your guns. It just empty rhetoric.

Dude, are you hitting on me?
I dont believe that citizens should be allowed to own neutron blasters or low yield hand held atomic devices either, whenever they get invented, no matter how much fun they are. If there are no neutron blasters in the country, you dont need one to protect yourself from one. QED.
There is, in my opinion, and that of most of the UK, no justifiable reason for private ownership of lethal weapons, with very rare and tightly controlled exceptions.
Those are my opinions. So shoot me
Edit: I'd also make the point again, that a government is "of the people". We each have the capability to get involved and change whatever aspect of it we dont like. Trusting the government to always do the right thing is unrealistic, however knowing that I can organise a grass roots political movement, get elected and change whatever it is that the government is forcing upon us wrongly... well, I'd put my faith in that over a hand gun any day of the week.

Popadapill, while your argument about situations escalating because someone has a gun is valid in some cases, that can be applied to other things. An interesting comparison:
Over the past few years there has been around 9,000-11,000 homicides using a gun in the US per year, depending on which sources you look at. Comparatively, nearly 33,000 people were killed in car accidents in 2010, and that number is down from 40,000+ people that were killed each for for decades before. There are about 270,000,000 registered guns in the US, as well as countless unregistered, as compared to the 254,000,000 cars. Now, how many of those car accidents happened because someone was racing, driving risky, or otherwise impaired? Should we ban cars?
As I said, murder is one of the least common crimes committed in the US, and not all murders are committed with guns, and not all gun homicides are committed with registered firearms. Cars are FAR more dangerous and lethal, having about three times more deaths while having about 15,000,000 less of them in circulation than guns.
So to really get a grasp on the situation, you must understand that law abiding citizens who legally own guns are not the problem. The guns being used in the streets by gangs to kill each other are not firearms being sold legally by people registering with their local state police department.

I don't see the how firearm ownership jumped to invading Iran because of something Goering said. I'm willing to listen to anyones arguement but I don't see the connection here. I'm not going to bash anti-gun people, by all means if you dislike firearms, don't own one, just don't try and take away my right of ownership.

I live near Chicago, Il. Illinois is of the most restritive states in the country in regards to gun control and the city of Chicago is worse. Until recent court cases were decided people in Chicago were not allowed to own a gun at all. None. Chicago continues to have one of the highest murder rates (with fire arms) in the country on par with New York city. Yes they are large cities I get that this will skew the numbers so consider this. The Chicago per capita murder rate is 15.6 persons in 100,000 people. 75% of these homicides are committed with a gun. Guns were banned in Chicago before 2010. All the statistics above are from before 2010.
when i talk about it im kinda talking about if your were to start afresh,no one or a very small percentage of ppl had guns, same with gun crime...would you still want to own one, have laws where any tom dick or harry could have one if he ''looked'' normal.I think USA as had it now with guns, may as well stay as you are..nothing will change, your flooded with guns.

the question was asked on this page, before a post of yours. no problem if it was missed though.
By Swag [929733]First, the definition of socialism.
Any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods.
wow, that answers it, so much detail. if I didn't know what it was, that would surely educate me. not.
By Swag [929733]Second, why obama is a socialist.
Look at what parts of the private sector that the government has taken over or gained some sort of ownership since obama has taken office.
The auto industry
The mortgage industry
The healthcare industry to some extent
The banking industry
The student lending industry (the government totally pushed out all private lenders)
this is the "collective or governmental ownership" part I suppose.
apart from 'banking industry' (a bit vague, but I'll let it pass) are those key sectors of the economy?
By Swag [929733]Then we get to the redistribution of wealth. No one can deny he wants this. Since Obama has become president, payments such as welfare, social security, and unemployment benefits have been approximately half of the growth in personal income. This comes on top of raising taxes on anyone who makes over 250k a year. That is redistribution of wealth.
"administration of the means of production and distribution of goods" part?
goods and wealth...not really the same thing is it?
one thing is how money is taxed/used by a country's government (any administration needs to do this, socialist or not), a completely different thing is saying who gets beef and who gets bread.
By Swag [929733]Next, he is very fond of his fathers ideologies.
Ok, so...because family members are "confirmed socialist(s)" and he is proud of a brother, that means he is obviously a "confirmed socialist" and that pride can't have any other reason than political ideology. makes sense to me.
Bill Ayers doesn't ring any bell, I'm sorry. not saying you don't have a point there, but I just don't know who he is or what he has done to debate that. enough said it is.
in summary, you don't know what socialism is. that part is not wrong, you can be ignorant of something and that doesn't make you stupid.
but when you call apples to oranges because you think you know what apples are...

when i talk about it im kinda talking about if your were to start afresh,no one or a very small percentage of ppl had guns, same with gun crime...would you still want to own one, have laws where any tom dick or harry could have one if he ''looked'' normal.I think USA as had it now with guns, may as well stay as you are..nothing will change, your flooded with guns.
Ban/strictly control the sale or manufacture of ammunition. Maintain a watch at your borders to limit smuggling. The problem will dry up eventually. Have gun amnesties prior to and after making private possession illegal without a stringently controlled license like they did here. Thats off the top of my head... I'm sure there are far better methods of removing them from circulation. It certainly wouldnt be easy, but its not unachievable either.
Well folks, thats it, I've left the game. To those of you who think of me as a friend, I thank you and wish you all the best. Enjoy the game, and take care.

There is a reason nobody has successfuly invaded the United States in over 200 years. Every one has a gun.
you actually think that is a serious argument?
Yep.
Maybe it is a serious argument - but it is a very silly one
