Alright well I had one.... Bit of an unfortunate turn of events in the last 6 months or so of my life. But I built it myself. The back is all constructed of styrofoam carved to look like rocks. There are also 13 2.5" PVC pipe caves, and one 3" cave for the larger fish. The styrofoam is secured to the tank with aquarium grade silicone, and held together with wood pegs. The finishing was a little rougher than I originally intended, and made with quickrete stucko mix. Yes, concrete has a high alkalinity and shoots up the pH of the water to toxic levels for fish. So I cycled through about ten tanks of water 750 gallons +. I had a good run, keeping it for about two years. I had many cichlids Malawi, Tanganyika, etc. Unfortunately when I was moving out of my house the movers I had hired ended up blowing the side out of it.

Bumblebee, electric yellow, kribensis, jewel, jack dempsey, red terror, green terror, cory cat, pleco, bicher, orange fish, blue fish, one fish, two fish.

They were regularly breeding, sometimes within the same "race" and sometimes with others. But more often than not they were diet supplements for the others.

Overview

t3pb.jpg

Bicher, he was my favorite.

q5tr.jpg

cory catfish, full grown at about 4", normally more silver but they show black spots when aggravated. He even killed his own brother, they are very territorial...

7z88.jpg

This is what real heartbreak looks like....

1hye.jpg

All of this was ran using a Rena SP3 canister filter, coupled with a fluval 650 hang on filter. Adequate airflow was provided with my whisper, can't remember brand of heater, but it was a good one underwater, and plastic so the fish wouldn't bust it. Tank was way overstocked, and the breeding did not help, but with my regular cleaning schedule the fish were healthy.

Fish normally occupy the bottom part of a tank, but by building "homes" for them taller I had more space for more fish... In a way. Next time I do this my caves/rocks will look much better, and I will use acrylic, and a sump. Definitely will drill my pumps as well. I am looking towards the 3-500 gallon range on my next adventure. Next time I will take more pictures of construction, and be sure to save them....

My brother has quite a big collection of fish. Don't see the fascination personally. They're just fish.

One of his recently got sucked into the filter. Half its head is now missing, yet it's still alive. That confused me.

Well, I had lost a handful of them prior due to a cold winter and a burnt out heater. I left for the weekend and came home to a 60 degree tank that was normally 78 as the heater went out. A few did not recover so well, but most of them were fine. After the tank broke I dropped them off at the local aquarium shop in a large bucket, and they quarantined them for a bit to insure they were healthy, and then resold them.

no fuss either ... i work the night shift so anything noisy and requiring too much attention is a huge no-no

tbh i talk to mine ... i call him bolinhas (translates into : little balls) ... i could almost swear he recognises me .. he'll be swimming happily and when i approach the aquarium he'll swim up to my side and won't leave until i feed him

however i keep him in the kitchen so maybe he's just afraid i'll toss him into the frying pan

I used to have an aquarium until the ceiling caved in on it. Fortunately no wish were harmed and we moved the goldfish to an outside pond.

Just wondering, how much does a good aquarium cost and maintain? For that matter how long do fish even live?

depends on the size of the aquarium and fish species you have in it ...

a friend of mine has a whole room filled with aquariums and breeds some species so he manages to turn a profit from what started as a hobby

as for life ... also depends on the fish species ... the comet i have now can live 14+ years under good conditions

They're really interesting pets. What they are doing in the pic is waving their big claw around. The males have the one big claw and they use it to attract the lady crabs. Even though there are 4 males and no females in the tank they still wave alot of the time. They do all sorts of fun and interesting things.
