So, a few of us had fun in a topicless thread the other day which has been sent to the graveyard now. And a few people posted some folk-type song lyrics that they liked. It got me thinking that I don't know enough folk music really.
So, please post the lyrics or titles of your favourite (if you have some) folk music. It can be from anywhere in the world.
I'll go first:
This song is called Black is the colour. It's sung by lots of people, so you can choose your own favourite.
Black is the colour of my true love's hair,
Her lips are like some roses fair,
She's the sweetest smile, And the gentlest hands,
I love the ground, Whereon she stands.
I love my love and well she knows,
I love the ground, whereon she goes,
I wish the day, it soon would come,
When she & I could be as one.
Black is the colour of my true love's hair,
Her lips are like some roses fair,
She's the sweetest smile, And the gentlest hands,
I love the ground, Whereon she stands.
I go to the Clyde and I mourn and weep,
For satisfied, I ne'er can be,
I write her a letter, just a few short lines,
And suffer death, a thousand times.
Black is the colour of my true love's hair,
Her lips are like some roses fair,
She's the sweetest smile, And the gentlest hands,
I love the ground, Whereon she stands.
As a personal request, please don't post only youtube videos- cause I can't watch them... please post the name of the songs at least.
Thanks!
Also, no hating on folk music please. If you don't like the genre, just don't post.

The Assumption Song by Arrogant Worms.
There was an old farmer
Who lived on a rock
He sat in the meadow
Just shaking his
Fist at some boys
Who were down by the crick
Their feet in the water
Their hands on their
Marbles and playthings
And at half past four
There came a young lady
She looked like a
Pretty young creature
She sat on the grass
She pulled up her dress
And she showed them her
Ruffles and laces
And white fluffy duck
She said she was learning
A new way to
Raise up her children
So they would not spit
While the boys in the barnyard
Were shoveling
Refuse and litter
From yesterday's hunt
While the girl in the meadow
Was rubbing her
Eyes at the fellow
Down by the dock
He looked like a man
With a sizable
Home in the country
With a big fence out front
And if he asked her politely
She'd show him her
Little pet dog
Who was subject to fits
And maybe she'd let him
Grab hold of her
Small tender hand
With a movement so quick
And then she'd bend over
And suck on his
Candy, so tasty
Made of butterscotch
And then he'd spread whipped cream
All over her
Cookies that she had
Left out on her shelf
If you think this is dirty
You can go f**k yourself

The Drovers Dream.
The tune adds a lot of character to the song, so it is much better to find a audio of this, The Irish Rover's version is highly recommended, if you can find one. Personally, I think most other singers sing it too slow , for this song.
One night when travelling sheep, my companions lay asleep
There was not a star to illuminate the sky
I was dreaming, I suppose, for my eyes were nearly closed
When a very strange procession passed me by
First there came a kangaroo, with his swag of blankets blue
A dingo ran beside him for a mate
They were travelling mighty fast, and they shouted as they passed
"We'll have to jog along, it's getting late"
The pelican and the crane, they came in from off the plain
To amuse the company with a Highland Fling
The dear old bandicoot played a tune upon his flute
And the native bears sat round them in a ring
The drongo and the crow sang us songs of long ago
While the frill-necked lizard listened with a smile
And the emu standing near with his claw up to his ear
Said, "Funniest thing I've heard for quite a while"
The frogs from out the swamp, where the atmosphere is damp
Came bounding in and sat upon the stones
They each unrolled their swags and produced from out their bags
The violin, the banjo and the bones
The goanna and the snake, and the adder wide awake
With the alligator danced "The Soldier's Joy"
In the spreading silky oak the jackass cracked a joke
And the magpie sang "The Wild Colonial Boy"
Some brolgas darted out from the tea-tree all about
And performed a set of Lancers very well
Then the parrot green and blue gave the orchestra its cue
To strike up "The Old Log Cabin in the Dell."
I was dreaming, I suppose, of these entertaining shows
But it never crossed my mind I was asleep
Till the Boss beneath the cart woke me up with such a start
Yelling, "Dreamy, where the hell are all the sheep?!"

A stray child
if you are lost in your way
deep in an awesome story
don't be in doubt and stray
cling to your lonesome folly
now you're too close to the pain
let all the rain go further
come back and kiss me in vain
mother oh do not bother
hear the chorus of pain
taking you back to proper ways
it's so easy to find
if you could remind me
now you are lost in your way
deep in an awesome story
so I will find you again
kiss you for lonesome folly

The Wild Rover by countless bands
I've been a wild rover for many a year
And I spent all my money on whiskey and beer,
And now I'm returning with gold in great store
And I never will play the wild rover no more.
chorus: And it's no, nay, never,
No nay never no more,
Will I play the wild rover
No never no more.
I went to an ale-house I used to frequent
And I told the landlady my money was spent.
I asked her for credit, she answered me "nay
Such a custom as yours I could have any day."
chorus
I took from my pocket ten sovereigns bright
And the landlady's eyes opened wide with delight.
She said "I have whiskey and wines of the best
And the words that I spoke sure were only in jest."
chorus
I'll go home to my parents, confess what I've done
And I'll ask them to pardon their prodigal son.
And if they caress (forgive) me as ofttimes before
Sure I never will play the wild rover no more.
chorus
I could go on and on about Irish drinking songs. There's about a billion of them
Play a gig in Ireland, play a few drinking songs before you launch into your stuff and everyone's already too pumped up to care if it's shit You can kinda apply this theory anywhere because the songs are pretty universal stories told from an Irish point of view, but it works best if you're playing for an Irish crowd.

I like this song a hell of a lot, by folk I don't just mean celtic music. This is a modern song by gorgol bodello, they call themselves gypsy punk.
This one is called 'Start wearing purple'. I'd still class this a folk, although I'd probably be shat on for saying that by true folk heads.
Start wearing purple wearing purple
Start wearing purple, for me now
All your sanity and wits, they will all vanish
I promise, it's just a matter of time
I know you since you were a twenty and I was twenty
But thought that some years from now
A purple little little lady will be perfect
For dirty old and useless clown
So yeah, start wearing purple wearing purple!
Start wearing purple for me now!
All your sanity and wits, they will all vanish,
I promise, it's just a matter of time!
I know it all from Diogenis to Foucault
From Lozgechkin to Paspartu
I ja kljanus obostzav dva paltza
Schto muzika poshla ot Zvukov Mu!
Start wearing purple wearing purple!
Start wearing purple for me now!
All your sanity and wits, they will all vanish,
I promise, it's just a matter of time!
So yeah, start wearing purple wearing purple!
Start wearing purple for me now!
So why don't you start wearing purple?
Why don't you start wearing purple
Start wearing purple for me now!
All your sanity and wits, they will all vanish,
I promise, it's just a matter of time!
So Fio-Fio-Fioletta! Etta! Va-va-va-vaja dama ti moja!
Eh podayte name karetu, votetu, I mi poedem k ebenjam!
So yeah, start wearing purple wearing purple!
Start wearing purple for me now!
All your sanity and wits, they will all vanish,
I promise, it's just a matter of time!
