The forum score was introduced back in March of 2009. In the initial announcement, Chedburn laid it out pretty clearly:

http://www.torn.com/forums.php?forumID=1&ID=5398509
By Chedburn [1]
Forum change
Users can now rate threads with a thumbs up / thumbs down which will give it a rating.

Weve also added forum score which should be quite interesting. If it doesnt work, then it doesnt work and itll be removed. You will gain and lose score depending on how you use the forums. Forum score is only gained/lost in the public forums, not company/faction forums. Being active in the forums and creating intelligent threads will boost your score dramatically.

+ 5 For making a new thread
+ 1 For making a reply
+ 1 When someone gives your thread a thumbs up
- 1 When someone gives your thread a thumbs down
- 10 When a staff member deletes your reply
- 10 When a staff member moves your thread
- 50 When a staff member deletes your thread
- 20 When a staff member locks your thread

Thank you.

Since the introduction of the forum score, it's been all over, and it didn't take long before the feature was removed from Announcements (they still register, they just don't show).

Overall, thread scores tend to reflect, generally speaking, interest in a thread.

When it comes to individual players and THEIR forum scores, trends definitely emerge.

The scoring system, particularly the demerits, were seemingly introduced to deter the constant posting of pure shite and spammers.

The only shortfall being that negative forum score has no negative impact on the player. Now, to my suggestion:

Upon implementation of this suggestion, anyone with a negative forum score should be reset to zero. A clean slate, it you will.

After which, anyone making it to -100 forum score gets an automatic forum ban of 7 days.
Their score is then reset to Zero, however their statistics page will register their ban under the "Other" column.

For example:

Other:
Logins: 5,315
Time played: 42d 3h 48m 37s
Merits bought: 0
Energy refills: 237
Times trained by director: 59
Army spying: 1
Stat enhancers used: 0
Viruses coded: 32
Days been a donator: 396
Times voted: 0
Automatic Forum Bans: 1

Each subsequent time the player reaches a negative forum score of -100, they are again automatically banned from the forums, but for an additional week (ie: 2 weeks). Their score is reset to zero. Rinse, and repeat.

A minor additional suggestion, it might be equally as interesting to track rates...

For example:

Other:
Logins: 5,315
Time played: 42d 3h 48m 37s
Merits bought: 0
Energy refills: 237
Times trained by director: 59
Army spying: 1
Stat enhancers used: 0
Viruses coded: 32
Days been a donator: 396
Times voted: 0
Rates +: 14
Rates -: 12,376

Automatic Forum Bans: 1

*edit to fix code
Now, let it rain -'s

Not really against it in principle, but the potential for abuse is strong.

I'll remain on the fence for now.

I think it's a good idea, however with the optional idea of tracking rates, does that track the rates the user has given or the rates the user has received? If the former, since there's a ratio of + to - rates required (otherwise you get barred from - rating for awhile) can't really see the point of it. If the latter, cool

LOL. Dumb suggestion only forum warriors like you and Link would care because if a player with negative forum score starts a thread it means the end of the world to you.

Relax, its only a game. Forums are public so everyone can use them, if a user said something wrong staff will deal with it instead of auto bans LOL.

It would be good (woo high for score for me) but abused.

The response is going to be "Only staff should has the power to ban"

This.

People with their multis would get people banned just because the didnt like someone.

It would take some effort though unless you already use the forums badly

I don't think that players should be given any potential control over another person's bans. Leave that to staff and staff alone.

Unrated.

How about there was another forum score only you and staff could see that was only effected by bad posts causing staff to intervene.
That would be the score that would cause the punishments on milestones.

If staff are required to intervene then there'd be there to ban them anyway if required... seems redundant...

I agree though but if you see a score on you homepage lets say and it is just about to hit one one the ban milestones it would keep you from posting threads to troll or flame and what not.

I don't like this idea as people can rate - your thread and you get to 100- form score for players that like rateing threads down

I don't see the need when forum score itself is useless and the only ones who care about having a visable personal stat are those who actually give a shit about their score.

What about threads locked at the request of the OP?

I think we should either use it or loose it.

I say no to this.

That would not be all that useful because except for the way of getting a bunch of negative votes on the thread all those other ways that give negative forum scores there is a member of staff already there taking care of the problem. Putting a cut and dry thing based on score would not be fair to some people who make a lot of threads which then they ask to be closed, like selling threads, graphics threads and contests. Where someone just gets a forum ban for making a few honest mistakes. Staff should be the ones deciding what sort of punishment people get also. If I was to lock a thread it goes to -100 and then I need to give a ban that is longer than 7 days depending on the offence I would then need to go and change it.
