Whilst playing Torn last night I thought up a change to the way the gym works so that it is slightly more interesting and it also adds another way to spend merits into the game.

My proposal is that when training in the gym you have a small chance to gain a bonus on top of the gain you already made from training. This could be explained by the fact that you benched all of your reps in perfect form or you achieved a personal best on an agility training course.

The numbers

Playing around with some numbers in my head this morning I came up with these figures:

The stat-gain bonus would be 10%

The base chance for you to get the bonus would start at 2.5%

You could then upgrade this chance with merits (still need a name for merit upgrade) at 0.25% at a time. This would give a 5% chance to gain a stat increase with 10 merits spent.

(I feel the numbers will probably need tweaking)


The outcome

The outcome would look something like this:


You managed to successfully bench 1 rep using a 359kg barbell
You gained 1000.0000 strength

You benched your rep(s) in perfect form!
You gain an additional 100.0000 strength



You completed an agility training course 1 time with your quickest time being in the top 9th percentile
You gained 1000.0000 speed

You completed the agility training course with a new personal best!
You gain an additional 100.0000 speed



You managed to complete 1 minute in an intermediate boxing session throwing 3 punches
You gained 1000.0000 defense

You blocked all of your sparring partner's punches!
You gain an additional 100.0000 defence



You played 1 minute of pool winning a total of 1 game
You gained 1000.0000 dexterity

During the pool game you didn't make any fouls!
You gain an additional 100.0000 dexterity


This idea is definitely open for further suggestions, comments and criticism!

In order to balance the potential positive outcome there would have to be a potential for negative outcome as well.

EX:

"You walk into the gym without having slept well. Your workout is X% less effective for today"

After balancing I have to ask myself, "what's the purpose of adding these in the first place?" Would you trade the rather uniform manner of training that we currently enjoy for "random" bonuses or losses? I wouldn't. The manner in which we train is one of the things about this game that I love the most, and I see no reason to change it whatsoever.

Whether it's earning money to buy drugs, or joining a faction and doing education courses to earn static bonuses, the idea is that such bonuses are earned.

I may be in the minority here though.

So if I get eg. 500k for 250e, I'll get additional 50k? Kinda much. Since with capped stats you just dump what you have.

Also, adding negative outcome would balance it a bit, but people will complain they have more loss than gains etc.

It does sound a lot when you put it like that however with the base chance of it happening being 2.5% its not going to happen so often.

If I take your example you gain 500k from 250e and then 50k bonus. It sounds a lot but if you only have a 1 in 40 chance of it happening then on average you would gain 20 mil in stats before gaining the now comparatively small bonus of 50k. With 55 merits spent upgrading the bonus you would still gain 10 mil stats before the 50k bonus.

Everybody would become stronger. This would help the weaker players hit the stat cap faster.

As much as I like the idea to increase my stats a lot faster, I dislike the fact that it would be easier for lower levels to catch up to my hard work thus far. And for that reason: R-
