How about some weapon mods? Each weapon could hold 2 different mods and each would offer a different bonus. Maybe something like this:

Gun Mods


Silencer: Adds a 3% chance of successful stealth attack.
Requirements: Pistols, SMGs and Rifles.
Cost: $100

Red Dot Sight: Improves chance of hitting by 5%.
Requirements: Pistols, SMGs, and Rifles.
Cost: $250

Extended Magazine: Adds room for more rounds. (How many depends on gun.)
Requirements: Any gun.
Cost: $250

Shotgun Choke: Reduces spread for +5% damage and -3% chance to hit.
Requirements: Shotguns.
Cost: $250

Scope: Improves chance to hit by 5%.
Requirements: Pistols or SMGs.
Cost: $200

Armor-Piercing Bullets: Attacks have a 10% chance of ignoring opponets armor.
Requirements: Pistols, SMGs and Rifles.
Cost: $1000

Slug Rounds: Condences spread into a single potent burst for +7% damage and -5% chance to hit.
Requirements: Shotguns.
Cost: $300

Incendiary Ammo: Burns targets for +3-5% extra damage per attack.
Requirements: Any gun.
Cost: $250

Explosive Rounds: Large explosive bullets that cause a big boom for +20% damage but cuts the clip size of the gun by HALF. (Rounded down!)
Requirements: Any gun.
Cost: $2000


Melee Mods


Nails: Stick these into a nice big hunk of wood for +15% damage.
Requirements: Baseball Bat.
Cost: $25

Stun Mod: Shock an opponet for a 15% chance of stunning per attack. (Being stunned causes them to lose their next attack.)
Requirements: Any melee weapon.
Cost: $250

Poison Mod: Deadly poison adds 5% damage on each hit.
Requirements: Any melee weapon.
Cost: $200

Barbed Wire: Ouch. This sadistic mod adds 10% bonus damage per attack.
Requirements: Blunt weapons.
Cost: $500

Lemon Juice Finish: Adds 25% damage to all critical hits. (It smells nice too.)
Requirements: Bladed weapons.
Cost: $300

Small Hidden Sheath: Grants a +5% chance of successfully using a stealth attack.
Requirements: Knives.
Cost: $100

Diamond Teeth Mod: Adds +15% damage and +3% chance of getting a critical hit.
Requirements: Chainsaw.
Cost: $100,000

Extended Reach Mod: Makes the weapon 5% more likely to hit.
Requirements: Any melee weapon.
Cost: $150

Firm Grip Handle: Increases the chance of getting a critical hit by 3%.
Requirements: Any melee weapon.
Cost: $200

Yep they are introducing something along these lines with the 2.0 stuff.
