Sometimes I'll look at a post or message and think 'that looks just like the idiot who posted here/messaged me the other day', and it was, they just changed their name.

Also it is sometimes difficult to keep track to who you're talking to in your faction if they choose to change their name a lot.

Absolutely no problem with players changing their names whenever they want.

Suggestion is to display a history of recent names in their profile, going back as far as the devs want and maybe even putting dates to the changes.

I see what you are saying. However, I dont believe this is really necessary. Just my opinion.

I've ran into the same problems myself, and it is pretty annoying. Especially when they try to pass it off as they've never talked to you before. It's not a bad idea, but it's also not really necessary. It would serve a small portion of the community, and affect a much larger portion that probably changes their names often for legitimate reasons.

It's a suggestion... I'd assume all suggestions are 'not really necessary', otherwise they'd be posted in the bug thread

It would benefit in being to be able to track certain 'slippery' characters, and also to track friends who change their name often.

It would not be good for someone who has screwed up in some way and wants to hide for a while.

Probably the best thing to do would to have the players name highlighted or have an Icon appear beside the name, if they had recently changed it. This way, it would alert people that, the person had changed their name. You could also have it so that when you put your cursor over the players name or icon, a floating balloon would appear showing that persons last few names...You get the idea...

all in all, not a very needed impliment, but its not a bad idea..=)

not rated..

There's a big difference between adjusting something that will do little beyond wasting the developer's time, and adding to the game-play experience of everyone. When you read the phrase, "not really necessary", try to think of it as meaning "effectively wasting everyone's time".

Well that's your opinion, which is fine, personally I'd get value from knowing players' previous names.

I say no to this. It could cause some security issues. People would just look at a profile and know exactly what someone username is for sure. Instead of not knowing if they have ever changed it and not knowing what name they use to log in. I can see this causing some issues.

I can see why you want something like this implemented but that is why there are user IDs that everyone can see.

If knowing a previous username is a security issue, that has nothing to do with this suggestion. Are you saying that any player who has not yet changed their username is liable to be hacked?

Secretaries will hate it more. DrZed's point is perfectly valid.

This is not something that should be public for reasons involving verifications when an account's owner is in question.

It's generally expected for the actual owner of the account to be more likely to know their previous names than someone who isn't the actual owner which is why this is a question used in verifications (one of many questions granted, but I'd rather we not compromise the usefulness of the questions we do have with suggestions such as this).

This suggestion puts a user's account at risk for that above reason, not good, plus their log in username would be on show, also not good.

Whilst I am not saying it makes said user liable to being hacked, I'd rather we not improve the "hacker's" odds.

My previous username started with my real name, xxcathead. I'd much prefer if people couldn't see that now.

I think it's a great idea and I've been thinking for a while of making a name changing suggestion. Something along the lines of a DeedPoll section in the newspaper with a list of this week/month's name changes.

I'm thinking again that what you say is a weakness of Torn security that is unrelated to this suggestion.

Perhaps if knowing a user's login name is a security issue then this should be addressed, rather than saying this suggestion is bad.

Maybe it's time to create new login/user names?

It was a more polite way of saying why this idea will never happen than just saying it will never happen, sorry. You've clearly misinterpreted my answer so then I'll just keep it blunt and say "this idea will never happen".
