I am asking if you can please somehow set it up so that players that are known to have passed away are not labeled with the Deserter rank. Looking at the TC Community page, there are a few listed, unfortunately, and think they deserve a special rank.

I think no matter what you call it someone may get upset (ie. if someone has gotten lost or gone missing IRL then it wouldn't be much better than the "deserter" tag for their relatives / friends).
IMO it should just be "inactive" as it's the most appropriate description - no need to make a fancy sounding title out of it (I think that's the mistake here).
Retired sounds good since thats exactly what happens to the account. Or just revert the deserter class to how it was before update so it shows no class.
