I was thinking about why I don't donate. The short answer is obvious and a common one: a proclivity for financial restraint.
So, I asked myself what WOULD get me to part with some of my wee entertainment budget to Torn.
The answer for me has been probably something far from unique:
A unique company, property, or armour/weapon.
It's not rocket science, which is why so many other browser based games have buy in packs akin to torn, but also special items players can buy with rl cash, and that is the only method these particular items are introduced into the game environment.
One way this might be feasible would be to add a destination, and the only way to get there is with a special ticket. Something like
a First Class Ticket to Hong Kong.
At the destination the game could provide a rotation of items that changes quarterly or whenever, but the only way to get to that destination is with a ticket that costs the same as a donator pack, where players can exchange DPs for items. This would drive DP and point sales potentially, and release items into the game that could, once introduced, then be traded among players.
Anyhow, just putting it out there. It's born out of the genuine question of what could ply my little $ from my tight fisted heartless hands, and that's what I came up with, for what it's worth.

So extra energy, free points and all the other perks not good enough for you?
And how would they be unique with so many players donating?
It's to easy for players to buy their way into the game as it is, no need to make it easier...

But i dont need to pay to get those things you mention Mr Todd, is what I'm saying. Hell, having special items being temp items and devote the time to making them attractive enough to be an incentive to buy would take some planning to be fair.
Lots of players donate, and the ones that are already donating will continue to, I was more looking to those who currently do not, and while reasons vary, what I wondered is what would motivate them to move from non paying to paying, in terms of what would motivate me personally.
There are ways to introduce items that would be able to meet the interests and needs of differing player styles, and their utility as opposed to their rarity would drive sales. It would use existing mechanisms, essentially, and require the introduction of items periodically, true.
btw: it's nice to see you're still around. I thought you'd abandoned us with The_Halibut

That not being a thing is the reason torn is the only text based game I play. I can't stand games where you can't compete without spending tons of real life money.

The catch there is a lot of new players would be doing this. In order for the rest of the non "cash cows" to compete we would need to be active a hell of a lot more. You're basically wanting a game that you can spend money and then spend all day earning experience because you have nearly unlimited energy or whatever you'd want. When you start talking custom modifiers-- would you really spend $10 USD on something that is 2x more accurate and damaging than the average weapon? Not to mention the modifiers we are talking about is like saying "oh we're just hitting someone with a weapon stronger than the rpg, with insane accuracy with a decent clip size".

Apply here if you have over 500k stats or are extremely active. |
