I rather like this idea.
No reason why the avatar could not be manipulated to suit the cloths is there?
People that cannot handle the graphic content will have profile images switched off anyway....
Maybe set an option in preferences. Users can display an individual image, and avatar (featuring their cloths) or have the TC Default grey image.
This is a text based game, but for a pure text based game there is a hell of a lot of images used... Crime, Gyms, fights, gambling, honours, awards, racing, .... as long as the avatar is static where is the harm?

some ideas rolling off my head, the items BASE price could be related to their "normal", but then their color (you mentioned colors) would tweak the items slightly.
the way colors effect would be similar to this:
red = 25% increase to durability, 15% loss on effect
blue = 25% increase to effect, 15% loss on durability
green = 10% increase to both effect and durability
[red,blue,green. cheap color option]
magenta = 50% increase to durability, 30% loss on effect
turquoise = 50% increase to effect, 30% loss on durability
lime = 20% increase to both effect and durability
[magenta,turquoise,lime. medium color option]
platinum = 75% increase to effect, 50% loss on durability
gold = 75% increase to durability, 50% loss on effect
iridium = 30% increase to both
[platinum,gold,iridium. expensive color option]
special colors could be unlocked by education (an idea) require a rare item (put so exclusivity on them) and you combine an expensive color clothing with the rare item.
eg. you combined your platinum tophat with tungsten, the effect is now 150% and durability is 10% above base (whereas platinum is 50% below base)
N.B. durability is how strong the clothing is, which affects how much punishment from battle the item can take. also things like doing crimes could wear out items...
another note, rather than durability it could just be how many days the clothes lasts, eliminating the risk of loosing a valuable item by chaining often

the fact is even though it's text based there are still a lot of pictures on this site... etc, houses,sigs,guns,items, and the list goes on.
i like this idea because it means those clothes from the shops can actually have use and having bonuses from certain clothes and having sets of them would make it awesome and in result help fix the economy with a bunch of new stuff to buy.
