Hi guys

Was wondering if anyone could give me any advice as I am unable to sleep at the moment.

Firstly, sorry if this seems a bit disjointed and all over the place, I'm going to write about things as I think about it so I don't forget to, and also for any mistakes as I have noticed some problems concentrating due to my lack of sleep (I will proof read it several times to try and get rid of any mistakes).

I've had problems sleeping since Sunday 3rd Feb, I didn't get to sleep until 1am, and got 4.5 hours sleep as I had to be up at 5.30am for work.

On Monday I decided to try and sleep on the sofa in front of the TV (usually works for me), I fell asleep at 2am, getting another 3.5 hours sleep.

Tuesday, I didn't even try to sleep as I knew I wouldn't, and got to sleep at 3.30am getting 2 hours sleep, but only after going driving for an hour to try and relax, and it appeared to work.

Wednesday (today), I decided I wouldn't even try to sleep so that hopefully on Thursday I'd be so tired I could sleep easily.

I've had 10 hours sleep over the past 87 hours (1am for me now), and have felt tired, but unable to relax and turn my mind off to get to sleep. As soon as I close my eyes, I don't feel like I will fall asleep, just as though I am fully rested and am holding my eyes closed.

As I write this I'm currently at work (although normal hours for my company are 6am - 5pm, I'm working in the stock warehouse tonight just putting away stock and doing general tidying). I decided to work because it would keep me from falling asleep, and who can complain about a bit of extra money?

I know it's worth mentioning that I originally couldn't sleep because I had things on my mind - namely a girl who I was seeing/very close to suddenly broke off contact without any explanation. As you can understand I am hurt by this, in fact I was very upset about it. I found that as soon as I closed my eyes on Sunday night, I would immediately start thinking about her and how everything was, so I tried to distract myself by consciously thinking about other things and playing on my phone.

I am still having problems in that when I relax and close my eyes I start thinking about her, and I'm sure you can understand I don't really want to dwell on things, but it also seems to have become that I just don't WANT to sleep at all. So a combination of trying to avoid thinking and I don't want to sleep anymore.

It's not that I'm not physically tired as I work in construction and I am building a greenhouse at the moment, and a lot of the things are very heavy and involves walking through knee deep mud which is all hard work.

Over the past few days I am noticed the follwing:
-Lack of concentration
-Dizzy/light headedness
-Moving shadows in my peripheral vision
-Small hallucinations (in the van home from work today I kept seeing people, but then once I looked harder it was actually a tree or a signpost, and similar weird things when I looked at something)
-Minor headaches
-Minor stomach aches
-Feeling weak, and tiring much faster than usual when carrying something heavy
-Heavy/dry eyes
-Palpitations/strange heart rate
-Bad balance
-Takes a few second for my eyes to focus
-While writing this I keep making silly mistakes (which I am correcting as best as I can), or writing a completely unrelated word in a sentence, bad spelling and missing words out in a sentence
-I think I have experienced microsleep (Google for definition, not sure the best way to explain it), but obviously I can't say for certain
-Bad memory

As for my general health, I am an 18 year old male in good health, I'm not usually ill, I am not over or under weight. I smoke about 15-20 cigarettes a day, and occasionally have a berr/glass of wine with dinner and I go out on a Friday night with my friends to town. I drink 1-2L of water a day and eat plenty, sandwiches, crisps, 2-4 pieces of fruit a day. I don't normally eat breakfast.

I have never had a problem with sleep like this before, I normally get about 6-7 hours sleep a night during the week and roughly 9-10 hours a night at the weekend. I had trouble sleeping every now and then for one night as everyone does, but nothing on this scale.

So is anyone able to give me any general/medical advice, or should I go to a doctor about this? I haven't talked about how I feel with anyone as I really struggle with opening up to anyone about my feelings.

That's everything I can think of, but if I think of anything more I shall add it to the bottom of the post, and if you think I've missed a anything out please just ask and I will try to answer your questions as best as possible.

Thanks

lifaen

EDIT:

As for stress in my life, I don't like my job and don't like working the long hours, but I wouldn't say I was particularly stressed or unhappy in normal life, although I am prone to getting quite down over things some things, and I feel quite negative about life a fair amount of time.

You're not in the dangerous stage of sleep deprivation so don't worry too much about it. The symptoms you're describing are fairly common among very tired people. They're not going to kill you and you're not going mad.

You've already solved your own problem, you know why you're not sleeping, you're thinking about this girl. You just need to sort it out. I know you said you don't like talking about how you feel, but it'll help if you do. Even if it's just someone online, at least you're getting shit off your chest.

When I was younger I would sometimes stay awake for days on end without a moment of sleep just to see what would happen. In high-school, during one summer, me and a few friends decided to try to go a week without sleep out of curiosity and bravado. Trust me, you have no need to worry until you start hearing disembodied voices calling out your name.

Turn off your computer, cell phone, TV (anything with a lit screen) at least an hour before you plan to go to sleep.
Avoid caffeine, nicotine, sugary drinks for about the same amount of time prior to going to sleep.
Alarm clocks also tend to keep you up if they are the digital kind with lit numbers, etc.
Exercise also helps.
