My team will probably win 79 games and miss the playoffs, again.

My team will probably good, and be up 2 games to zero during the first series, but lose the next 3 at home to the team who will win the world series. again.

Cubs fan here, I'm guessing we are going to win around 70 games because of the strong additions to the pitching staff. I don't expect anything better than that.

I know your pain.
We got a top knotch Japanese closer, a few rebuilding projects on our pitching staff...
but where's all the offense going to come from? Castro? Rizzo? I was definitely impressed that Soriano put up 100+ rbis last season, but it's unrealistic to think he'll even get more than 80 this year. 70 wins will be a good season for the Cubs if they manage it...They're a lot better team this year than last, so there's that.

I wish I remember now who it was on here that was telling me Castro was going to be a special HOF player that would carry the Cubs to a World Series just because he hit .300 as a 20 year old..... and then got very upset when I told him that meant very little.

I'm pretty optimistic as an orioles fan. after having a "rebuilding" decade i think we finally have a team that works. i am very optimistic about this year. hell all i wanted for last year was a winning season and look where we got. class is about to start so i can't regurgitate the entirety of my thoughts but i am ecstatic about the return (finally) of my heterosexual man crush brian roberts (seriously, no homo)

Wasn't me. Maybe if we had like, 5 or 6 guys hitting .300....That'd be a start.
We NEED pitching.

No, it wasn't you. It was some random chump poster on here, years ago. But I do wish he was back.
As for the Red Sox... my realistic expectations are tempered, but I think we have a reasonable chance to contend for a Wild Card berth fairly late in the season, but ultimately, I think we'll miss the playoffs for a fourth straight year. Our pitching staff is ok, maybe gets a C+ at best, as I still have faith in our top two guys still have potential, but after that I think it drops off significantly. The bullpen is alright, we got a good addition with Hanrahan but I'm not sold on Bailey and the rest is sort of up in the air and a mismatch of random guys; nothing solid or steady. Then our lineup.... it's been pretty decent overall, but the raw numbers themselves are a little deceiving, as I recall us having many games where we'd put up 13 runs in one game, only to be held to 0 or 1 runs over the next three games. Very inconsistent offense, and we're going to be mainly relying on young guys or veteran bats right now, no real proven in their prime hitters will be coming to the plate for Boston in 2013.
So I'll say 75-80 wins is realistic, but it's looking like 90 wins is the bare minimum that will probably be needed to clinch a playoff spot, and I just don't think we're there yet.

No one had to go into arbitration...impressive? Or is the players just getting too attached to their teams?

I think, in general, no one enjoys arbitration. The teams has to prove their case that the player isn't as good as he thinks and the player has to hope the arbitrators don't screw him and give him the team's low ball offer. more than anything, players and their agents use arbitration as leverage to get teams to sign them to contract extensions before they are arb. eligible.

Long time Orioles fan here (I was actually at the last game of the 1971 World Series at Old Memorial Stadium, which the O's lost to Pittsburgh, sadly,) but I am looking at a let down year tbh. I don't see much improvement over last year at all, and I seriously doubt the team will win as many one run games a they did last year...
I love Buck as coach, and the young guys did great last year, but I am thinking the O's might end up in third place behind the NY and Toronto this year.
I still see pitching as the main issue, and it is awfully tough to get wins when pitching is only okay at best.
Hopefully I am wrong. Go O's!

It's early, but the Orioles have definitely put up a good showing, knocking off the Yankees is always good, especially limiting them to 1 run.

as long as the yankees and phillies suck worse than the mets this year ill be happy (or if the mets dont make the playoffs - neither do either team, that works fine with me too) - the mets are still rebuilding. They have finally stopped signing senior citizens and are building from the bottom up. They got a young team and they are going in the right direction. They need to get rid of johan santana next year, the guy is a waste of money.

most of the yankees are wastes of money. A-Rod is not worth 29 million a year

I think Yankees are in serious trouble this year. Entered into the season with record setting $230m payroll and not a whole lot to show for it. Many of their stars are on the DL and some of them (Arod and maybe Jeter) may not return to be half as good as they used to be, simply due to age. Then you've got Rivera who's coming off a major knee injury at 43 years old, so you wonder if this will finally be the year he loses his stuff. After that, CC and Cano are good but then there's a significant drop off in talent and a big increase in age on their roster.
Maybe the Red Sox actually have a realistic chance to sneak into a playoff spot because I'm really not buying the hype with Baltimore repeating their success of last season and Tampa I really don't think has much of a roster either. Then you wonder if LAA or OAK are going to have good seasons again this year so.... who knows, maybe the AL is going to have a down year this season and Boston can sneak into October baseball with 85 wins as a second wild card.

As I predicted... the Orioles are off to a slow start. Will it continue all season long? My guess is yes, but I hope I am wrong. I just don't see the pitching we need.

I disagree with you on the yankees. I know you're a Sox fan so I can see your bias here, however I feel the yankees are going to be in their prime towards mid season. Yes they are old and many are injured BUT with them hurt now they have a good start (8-1 in their last 9 games after starting 1-4) and as long as they can keep a record above .500 until all the injuries come back they will be golden. As for Pettitte and Mo they might be old but show me a game this year they pitched and didn't own the mound. The Sox have an opportunity to make a dent in this year too, as i do not see Baltimore or Rays doing much damage in that division. I would keep an eye on Toronto but they shouldn't be too much of a threat either.
