Yep! Brilliant achievement. What's interested me about this though is that people have started to pipe up how this proves that Messi is the best ever. Funny to me, I don't think Muller has ever really been considered in the top 3 of all time.

Jimmy Johnstone is the greatest of all time. Not an opinion, fact. I don't care how or why you may disagree: you are wrong, f**k you, he's #1.

I agree.

Personally never heard Mueller's name mentioned as greatest of all time either.

Messi is amazing, and due to the fact that he is a current player he will be considered to be an all time great. The real indication will be if he is still remembered 40 or 50 years after he is done playing... that will be the true test.

I would love to see a break down comparison between Messi and Pele and Mueller which showed how many goals each had, and how they got them. Messi gets a lot of PK action. I don't know what percentage of goals Pele and Mueller got that were PK's or open field shots... would be an interesting comparison.

He needs a worldcup victory to be considered the greatest, he may be good for club football but people around the world hold the worldcup as the ultimate measuring stick.

Messi is not as good as you think... it's the players around him that make him look good, and besides look what league they're in; The only good teams are: Barcelona, Real madrid and Athletico Madrid all the rest are shit, he's just scoring against shit teams.

You make valid points, but Messi does what he does against the opponents he plays against, so the record is still valid. Messi would score a ton of goals in the EPL as well.

Any player in any sport can only be judged by the competition that is available during his or her playing days.

Messi is the best currently, and yes his team makes him better, as he makes his team better.

Fifa refuses to back Lionel Messi or Godfrey Chitalu for goal record

Fifa has refused to get involved in the debate about who holds the world record for scoring the most goals in a year.

It was widely reported that Lionel Messi's 86th goal of 2012, which he scored on Sunday, surpassed a mark set by Germany's Gerd Mueller 40 years ago.

But the Zambian Football Association claimed Godfrey Chitalu had scored 107 goals for club and country in 1972.

Fifa does not keep domestic records, so "it's not an official Fifa record", spokesman Alex Stone told BBC Sport.

The world governing body said that, given it only maintains statistics for the international competitions it runs, it is not possibly to ratify records from club football around the world.

"We don't have a database which details every football game played in every country from around the world since day one of their formation," Stone said.

"It's certainly nothing to do with bias - if we can confirm records from our tournaments we like doing that.

"It's the sort of data fans and the media like to see."

Stone confirmed that Fifa has not recognised Messi as holding the record.

"It's a record where someone in the media obviously collected statistics from somewhere and noticed Messi was about to pass that record."

True to a certain degree, however if you look at him in the champions league, he is no different.
He scores for fun in their too and that is not against 1 star teams, but teams that have won their own leagues hands down.

I was kind of surprised to hear it wasn't a recognized record...

It is still an impressive total.

Well, I can't really say it's surprising that there would be a lot of dispute over what an official record is, seeing as there are countless leagues in many countries all over the world that never play each other, of which some have no affiliation with each other, have athletes playing for multiple teams in one year and have an endless amount of tournaments and championships handed out.

He already got his 90 in last game with Atltico Madrid.

The worst is R.Falcao score just only one, and I thought ha ha Barca gone case with this Falcao,

but damn , a few minutes later this short little crazy guy score two goals.

I don;t think he can make his record breaking things without his teammates like Iniesta , Xavi and C.Febregas.

Gerd Muller is considered to be one of the greatest strikers of all time, he scored 487 goals in 555 games, and 68 goals in 62 international appearances. Probably not considered the greatest of players because he was a great goal scorer and not a scorer of great goals. I believe Muller didn't take any penalties of freekicks but Messi scored 10 penalties I believe (Not that it makes a difference, there is no way of telling that Muller would score them.)

Whilst that statement may have been true 10 - 20 years ago, i'm afraid it no longer is. Is the world cup really the greatest tournament in football? Was 2010 SA any good? The answer is no, I watched every game of the 2010 world cup and to be honest the standard of football was lower than the premiership. International football isn't what it used to be, it all about the Champions League now, it has better teams, better players, better quality of football and better entertainment.

Pele played in the same league during his prime, why is he considered the greatest? If a player plays for the same club (Messi) he isn't good until he proves himself elsewhere or he can't play in any other league etc etc, maybe hes just loyal to Barcelona because without them he probably wouldn't be a footballer. If a player plays for many teams (Ronaldo/Zlatan) then they are mercenaries and not true footballers because they only go for the money and have no loyalty.

The Premiership isn't as good as everyone makes out. Ruud Van Nistelrooy, Michael Owen, Theirry Henry all played in La Liga but never achieved the heights Messi did. Ronaldo has played in the Premiership and one season absolutely teared it to pieces but has he achieved what Messi has? The answer is no. Michu played for Rayo last season, now he is currently top scorer of the premiership, do you think the same would happen if a player from Wigan (Wigan and Rayo both finished 15th) went to La Liga and become top scorer? Highly unlikely. Lets compare those that finished 18th, Bolton and Villereal. A team that played in the champions league that season vs Bolton, its quite easy to tell which league has the better players and better teams when you break it down. ((Having said that, the premiership is top dog for entertainment.))

Don't be ridiculous. The quality of football in the World Cup may be a bit lower (always has been) but it is and always will be the ultimate football tournament and aim for any player.
