Pittsburgh should definitely be the favorite. You can throw out the standings because Crosby has been out for most of the year, but has returned and looked sharp, and Malkin is more talented than anyone on any other Eastern conference team, and possibly the entire NHL. I think this is Detroit's year in the West though. They have some dangerous players, and Zetterberg has found his shot again after going cold for nearly 3 months.

Unfortunately as of right now, if the standings stay as they are, BOS and PIT could be a very likely 2nd round match up. That could be dangerous. Best case scenario for Boston, or path of least resistance, would be if PHI overtook PIT in the standings so they reversed seeds, so that if PIT beat PHI in the likely 1st round match up, they would go on to face the Rangers, and that would be a great situation for the entire NHL, eliminating one of them. Who knows though... PIT may even overtake NYR for the top seed, and then everything changes too.

Either way, looks like there will be either PIT or NYR in the conference finals, but of course I have the Bruins in there as well

I'm not sure but from the looks of the standings everyone is pretty tight, playoffs should be great.

Did you see how Holtby played last night? If he can play like that against Boston I think the Caps should take it.

Ehh you can't ever judge these unknown rookies when it comes to those things. He's played in 21 total NHL games since being drafted in 2008, only 7 of which have come in this past season. Obviously, he has no playoff experience. So who knows how he will act when the pressure is really on. But you can't just say if Holtby plays well they can beat Boston, because Boston has outdone everything the Caps have done this year. More goals, better defense, better differential, better powerplay, better penalty kill... Not to mention it's not as if the Bruins don't have an elite, proven, goaltender as well. That being said, I liked the matchup with Ottawa A LOT better than Washington. I don't know why, because Ottawa is a better team I believe, but the Caps just found ways to matchup well against us.

PREDICTION TIMMEE!!

Eastern Conference
Rangers over Senators in 5
Bruins over Capitals in 6
Devils over Panthers in 6
Flyers over Penguins in 7

Western Conference
Canucks over Kings in 5
Blues over Sharks in 7
Blackhawks over Coyotes in 6
Red Wings over Predators in 4

Who won most of the match ups between Boston and the Caps this year

They were close games though and as mentioned it looks like Washington will be depending on a goalie who has absolutley no playoff experience.

I see the finals coming down to the Penguins vs. the Canucks though personally.

Eastern Conference
Senators over Rangers in 7
Capitals over Bruins in 6
Devils over Panthers in 6
Penguins over Flayers in 6

Western Conference
Canucks over Kings in 6
Blues over Sharks in 6
Blackhawks over Coyotes in 5
Predators over Red Wings in 7

I see some major upset happening this year.

If you see a majo rupset, expecting the Penguins and Canucks in the Cup is hardly that. The Senators beating the Rangers would be fairly surprising, although I don't think Ottawa is that bad of a team, for an 8th seed.

Yeah, the Senators did pretty well against the Bruins this year, but to be fair, a few of our meetings between the teams were during the Bruins' prolonged slump and injury problems. Let's not forget, Boston faced it's fair share of injuries this year, and it took a while before the team started clicking again. When we were healthy at the end of 2011, we were nearly unbeatable. But we lost Horton, Peverly, Marchand was suspended a few games, Rask went down with a month left, so, for a while we were mixing and matching a lot of lines. Over the past month, however, we've played pretty well. And as you said, Washington has a huge question mark at goalie, and it's not as if the Bruins are a struggling defensive team that would lead to a high scoring series. Ovechkin had a good year, but certainly not up to his personal standards... and let's face it.. he has a history of choking and quitting in the playoffs. Other than that, Semin and CHimera are the next biggest scoring threats with 21 and 20 goals, respectively... I just think that Chara, Seidenberg, Boychuck, Ferrence, and even Bergeron are going to be good enough on defense to force the Caps to play without relying on Ovechkin... and I don't think Washington can win that way. Whereas the Bruins have two guys with 29 and 28 goals, and have 6 total guys with 20+, so we can really spread the offense around.

I hear ya, the playoffs has a different atmosphere to it than the regular season. I think Backstrom is going to be Washington's wildcard, he is start to show flashes of his old self so regardless of who wins I think it will be a very tight series.

I didn't say the Penguins and the Canucks was going to be an upset but I really think Ottawa can beat the Rangers, they have their number this year it seems.

Just going to have to set back and enjoy the playoffs because speculating just from regular season is hard to do because everybody plays with so much more heart in the playoffs.

Ugh... am I the only one in the world who is not very impressed with "smashville?" I mean really... they are a decent team, but there's been an awful lot of hype around them late this year. I don't get it? They don't have any amazing goal scorer, their individual plus/minus' are ok, and their goalie is definitely good but certainly not the best even in his own conference. And please with this smashville.... the leader in penalty minutes on their team has 92, and only two players even over 40. So where the hell is this badass reputation coming from? I think any BOS/NYR or PIT/PHI game results in more PIM in one game than NSH has all year.

I'm still sticking with Detroit to win it. Maybe not in 5, like I originally said, but I just am not buying into Nashville

They don't have a bonafide goal scorer, but I'll admit, they have decent scoring depth. Last night's game, Nashville's bottom 2 lines produced all 3 goals. And if it wasn't for Rinne, Detroit would have easily won the game. They have a good top 2 D with a pretty solid goalie. Those are the difference makers in the playoffs. If a team can shut down another team's offence, then they have the series in the bag.

But being the Wings fan that I am, Detroit has way better scoring depth, defensive depth and our goalie's pretty good too, maybe not as good as Rinne, but he can steal games. Which is why I don't understand why Detroit's considered underdogs in this series. The Wings will prove all the haters wrong. But losing Helm for the rest of the playoff's will hurt.

My Predictions:

Western Conference:
Canucks over Kings in 6
Sharks over Blues in 6 (Blues' playoffs inexperience will be their downfall, but veteran leadership will help them out)
Coyotes over Blackhawks in 7 (Only because I really dislike CHI, but realistically CHI in 6)
Wings over Preds in 7

Eastern Conference
Rangers over Sens in 5
Bruins over Caps in 6
Devils over Panthers in 5
Flyers over Pens in 7

Nashville reminds me of the Bruins. No superstar scorer, but great D and a very good goalie.

We certainly know how far a team can go with that combo eh bosox?

They have ok scoring depth, but not great. I mean there are only two 20+ goal scorers on the team, granted there's three guys with 19 each, and then they drop off quickly after that. They're 4th in their conference in goals scored, which is respectable but, again, it's nothing super noteworthy... because that's not 4th out of 8, not 4th out of 15 anymore. And, for the record, that's 8th overall in the league, and 8th out of 16 playoff teams. Their defense is also pretty middle of the pack, being tied for 6th out of Western playoff teams, and 9th overall.

I think Nashville is just not that scary... I'd rather play them than a lot of other teams.

Wow. What a heart stopper of a game 1. No way Washington gets goaltending like that or blocks as many shots throughout the rest of the series. Other than that, I cant believe the low amount of shots they had.

Go Bruins!

Yeah that was a little strange....

Washington was held to SO few shots, I think at one point they had only 16 shots on net late in the 3rd... that's crazy. Seidenberg on Ovechkin looks to be a great matchup of two great players. I hope we can continue this momentum, and maybe we planted a seed of doubt in the rookie's head with that overtime goal.

Take the Devils' good game with a grain of salt... they are playing the Panthers... a team largely considered to be the worst playoff team. NJ is still ok, and should win the series, but I don't know how well they'd do beyond round 1.

Holtby was ok, but one good game does not mean you can take away all doubt. The only thing this proves is that he does have it in him, but whether or not he can continue doing it consistently in a playoff series... that's another thing.

And I told you guys the Flyers had a good shot at knocking the Pens out. Hell, i said they'd do it in 7, but at this rate, Pittsburgh will be lucky to steal a game heading back to Philly now.

The Pens are good at scoring but their defense is looking horribly right now, they may very well be out in 4 games. What about LA? I think they are surprising everybody, they are actually showing signs of having a decent offense although Quick has been amazing for them all year long.

Yeah, i don't know what to make of LAK. Vancouver looked to be getting ready for at least a conference championship run. But don't be fooled by the PIT/PHI series... if Pittsburgh finds a way to escape this round, I will still think they have a great chance at making a cup run. The two are just division rivals, so they know each other better than any of us know them, and they have more intensity towards each other. Any two division rivals playing in the playoffs goes against all stats.

This isn't anything new. Look at how dirty of a player Matt Cooke is, and how he ended Marc Savard's career a few years ago, but how Lemuiex never said anything...until Crosby got a concussion, yet Cooke is still on their team.
