Penguins should be back in the conversation with Crosby and that other guy who's name is slipping my mind. They were competitive without 2 of their top players, so I imagine this year they should improve.

I'm wondering when all these high draft picks are going to pay off for Edmonton, you'd think eventually they'd have a good year...

My bold prediction? Montreal misses the playoffs, and Toronto clinches a playoff berth.

I think Detroit falls off and does not play very competitively, as with the Capitals. I think both these teams have been playing with smoke and mirrors the past 2 seasons, and this time I think their streak comes to an end.

Oh, and also, Bruins repeat

Malkin looks like he's going to be incredible this year.

I can see the Rangers going far this year, definitely making it to the post season. I think the Caps will make the playoffs too and it'll be interesting to see how Phillies do with all their moves this summer. Toronto should make it into the post season aswell I think.

As for the west, I'm hoping the Sharks are gonna make it past the western conference final. They've got there 2 years in a row and lost. With the additions of Burns and Havlat as well as some vetern D men for depth, we gotta make it. That being said, Niemi is still questionable at the moment with his recent operation.

I'm guessing Malkin or Stamkos for most goals this year.

Also, I'm wondering if Brendan Shanahan (sp?) is going to keep up the vigor of his current fight against illegal hits. He's hit the preseason quite hard, will it keep up though?

I agree with a lot of what you said here. I thought NYR were going to be a sleeper pick to cause a lot of upsets in the playoffs last year. I'm really not sure what they did to improve their offense, but if their defense is as good as it was last year, they shold be in the picture again.

Philly seemed kind of flat last year...or as flat as a 1 seed can be. I'm not sure many teams actually "feared" them. Horrible defense/goaltending and didn't really have any devastating threat on offense. Should be interesting how they rebound.

Toronto could sneak in as an 8th or 7th seed. They've been getting it together down there for about a year now, maybe Kessel will finally have an explosive year we've all thought he would have had by now?

Although, call me a homer, but I think David Krejci of the Bruins is going to EXPLODE offensively. The whole time we've had him, we've been hearing about his offensive potential, blah blah, he plays on our top line...but he's never really had a great year. This last season, he scored 13 or 14 goals all season, but in the 25 playoff games alone he scored 12. Maybe he finally found his shot, and can have a 40+ goal season that he has the potential for.

In terms of the Rangers comment, the addition of Brad Richards is HUGE I think. Although I hear they're worried about the defense with Mark Staal still out due to a concussion.

As for Philly, Bryzgalov (sp?) is a great addition for goal, but they're too jumpy in their goalie choices I think, atleast they were last year.

In terms of the Bruins, I do like Krejci, I'm also expecting Marchand to do something, he can be a big impact player at times. Tyler Seguin as well, I was massively impressed by him towards the end of the season and the post season. I can see him getting alot more ice time by the end of the year.

Richards.....didn't he have some concussion injuries as well? Or am I thinking of someone else?

Buffalo just has no offense, and Miller didn't look lights out last year. With Toronto getting better, the Bruins the defending champs, and Montreal at least able to put up a fight... I don't see Buffalo being able to steal a playoff spot this season.

The East is looking stacked though, I think it's clear to see that the power of the NHL is back in the East.

Boston, Tampa, Washington, Pittsburgh, and Philly could go against anyone in the West I think.

As opposed to Chicago, Detroit, Nashville, Vancouver, Anaheim, LA, San Jose, and Dallas which are all great teams?

If you look at the points spread, it's clear to see that whilst the post season race isn't really tight in the East, in the West it comes right down to the last few games with like what, 3 teams fighting for the final playoff position?

As for the Buffalo comment, I can't really judge as I haven't payed much attention to them. But Miller at times isn't as consitent or amazing as he's made out to be I don't think.

Detroit fell off last season and were really not much of a threat. Chicago is good, but again, they fell off lat season and played a lot worse than people thought. Nashville... I guess they're good, but they just don't scare many people. Same with Anaheim and LA. Dallas is kind of hit or miss.

San Jose is good, and has been good a while, but they just can't ever get it together when it counts. Same with Vancouver really.

I think last season, everyone though the West was better, and in the playoffs, people expected the no one in the East to put up a fight. Then as the playoffs progressed, I think the those thoughts changed.

Of course the West has good teams, but I think the top East teams could beat them in a series.

I guess in the comparison of a 7 game series, you might be right. I guess we're both arguing different points. Perhaps the statement is the West has more good teams, but the East has the better calibre at it's top end maybe?

I'll agree that the West certainly is deeper, and you need to be better to make the playoffs out there. Put a 8th or 7th seed West team against a 5th seed East team, and I think the West would win. Hell, the 9th and 10th place teams that didn't qualify for the playoffs last year could have probably easily beaten the NYR or Buffalo.

I do think though that the Stanley Cup is going to stay on the East Coast for a while. There's just too much talent on some of these teams, and they're young. To be fair, this does sound a lot like Chicago though after they won their Cup. I wouldn't be surprised to see Tampa win a Cup again, especially if they can get better on defense.

I'd love to see Winnipeg do something half decent this year. Even just making it to the first round of the post season would be incredible for them and the fans. Unfortunately, I can't see it happening.

I could honestly not care any less how the Winnipeg Jets do it will not help the NHL one bit. You need to have the Original 6 teams doing well...same in any sport. The Tampa Bay Bucs or Milwaukee Brewers may be doing well in the NFL and MLB, but if the Steelers, Packers, Red Sox or Yankees suck, no one cares.

Not too bad a shout. Bryzgalov (sp?) is a great shout for netminder and Jagr seems to be fitting in well with Giroux. I'm hoping Briere is gonna pick up a bit - he's on my fantasy team.

Aussi, I have to admit, I'm pretty excited for what kind of player Seguin is gonna become. He seems set to be massive. And it's nice to see, albeit early in the season, Ekman-Larsson and Nugent Hopkins getting some points under their belts.

Pshh whatever. I still can't believe we tied the game in the 3rd down 2 goals only to lose 2-4 that was pretty weak.

At this point though, I'm just glad to see everyone getting involved and Jullien mixing the lines up. I really had high hopes for Krejci this season, but he's gotten off to a slow start with his injury. Seguin looks great though, this kid could really develop into something, and hopefully that could come this season. Already has 3 goals and 7 points, and he only had 11 goals and 22 points all last year I think.
