If it's putting an image on to your screen, you just need to install the drivers. Nvidia's support section on their website should be all you need.

no image on screen..have to use on board graphics to take me to desktop..
i was using a gt 9500, an older card but pcie x16 still..just not version 2..
reading up a bit and the asus motherboard can sometimes be temperamental with GPU's..
i went to one site and he had his gt 430 working on the same motherboad..weird

not sure if you can do something with it, but i had it once where my asus mobo didn't detect my GC anymore all of the sudden.. I just took it out, put it back and it worked again..
i read somewhere sometimes the contact points can become a bit corroded (or whatever) and that you "clean" it with pulling it out and putting it back in a couple of times.. be gentle tho..
again, i'm not sure if your problem is fixed with this stupid idea
good luck nonetheless

Try disabling the integrated graphics card from your bios and setting it to boot up from PCI-E first.

You said second hand... Do you know if it even works? Where did you get it from?

The card will not work in that slot. You have to have a PCIE 2.0 x16 or later. The graphics card is NOT backwards compatible, the port that it plugs into is.

The PCIE 2.0 x16 card is compatible with the PCIE 1.0 x16 slot.
After thinking about it for a bit, I ran into a similar problem like this before. I solved it by updating my bios and reinstalling windows. See if that helps.

If the fan spins up, it's obviously not a power issue. If the GPU, outputs or bios are fubar, nothing you do from this point is going to make a difference. I'd talk to whoever sold it to you and get your money back.

I Have sent the card back for a refund, thanks for the answers guys
looking around a few people have this peoblem and i think it comes down to the mobo not being compatable with alot of cards, even though you would think they are..
anyway next idea..looking for a HD 4850 or 4870..ive seen a chap say that the 4870 works with this board so touchwood it will..
i know that the mobo is old now and i shud look to get a upto date rig, but im determined to get a bit longer out of this and get a decent graphics card working with it, wish me luck

If you can get a 4870 working with it, that's still a bloody good card. I can't think of anything that it won't run at decent settings. You might struggle a bit with the very latest games but it should only be one step down in graphics quality or resolution.
