You do know there are horror films dating back beyond 2000 don't you?

Try the original The Haunting...

I know what you did last summer.
That was pretty scary. I saw it when I was young, so I was a bit afraid after I watched it Open closet doors were, and still are, a creepy thing for me.

Also, Jurassic Park was a bit scary too. I used to look out the window as a kid and imagine a giant T-Rex running through the streets, smashing buildings, and coming to eat me out of my window.

Yep.

Old classic horror movies (70's / 80's) all the way...

To name a few:

Nightmare on Elmstreet movies (part 1 and 3 being my all time favorite)
Halloween (original, 1978)
Psycho
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original, 1974)
Carrie (original, somewhere in the 70s I thinks )

The Candyman the first one

Not a particulary scary movie but very shocking. Near the start some kids are playing in a 'haunted house' and the baddy shows up and you think nothing much is going to happen now. Wrong the baddy kills the little kid, cant see much because its quite dark but it was very very shocking

For anyone that hasn't seen it, I would recommend The Poughkeepsie Tapes. It's a documentary-style movie about a guy who wanders around murdering people and kidnapping children. I'm pretty sure it's an independent film, so you'd have to look around for it(Pirate Bay, maybe), but it's easily one of my favorite horror movies of all time.

Have you actually seen any before 2000?
Older ones are much more scarier to be honest, new ones aren't bad but just seem to lack suspense. And I'm the type of person who gets nervous watching Lost or Jurassic Park.

I liked Martyrs. The new wave of French horror is really good, although I've heard American studios are remaking a bunch of them, including Martyrs and Inside. They will probably ruin them.

Blair Witch was really good. The Japanese Ringu is really f**king scary, too; the American remake is wank, though.

In the mouth of madness 1994
imdb
With the disappearance of hack horror writer Sutter Cane, all Hell is breaking loose...literally! Author Cane, it seems, has a knack for description that really brings his evil creepy-crawlies to life. Insurance investigator John Trent is sent to investigate Cane's mysterious vanishing act and ends up in the sleepy little East Coast town of Hobb's End. The fact that this town exists as a figment of Cane's twisted imagination is only the beginning of Trent's problems....

I know this thread is old but I was thinking hard about this today. I love "extreme" movies, so run of the mill horror movies are nothing for me. The only movie I can remember having any kind of effect on me was Blair Witch Project. I was probably 11 or 12 when I saw it. I really didn't think much of it when I saw it. After I watched it I remembered it was Sunday night and I had to take the trash out. My Dad lived in the middle of nowhere, like trees as far as you can see. It was night so it was dead dark. It was pathetic, every time I heard a noise I found myself bolting inside. Took me literally over an hour to get the can to the end of the driveway. I was so scared lol. Not to mention the house was a little less than 90 minutes from the woods where the movie was filmed. I have never been affected by a scary movie like that before.
