We were soldiers are definetly the best war movie (www.imdb.com/title/tt0277434/),
Saving private Ryan (www.imdb.com/title/tt0120815/) and
Platoon (www.imdb.com/title/tt0091763/) are also good movies....
But.. forget about the movies, and check out these series instead:
Band of Brothers (www.imdb.com/title/tt0185906/) (10 episodes) you just have to watch this...
Tour of duty (www.imdb.com/title/tt0092468/) (58 episodes over 3 seasons)

I don't know if this one counts but one of my all time favourite movies is Blood Diamond, i guess it counts since it's based around the Sierra Leone Civil War.. but i wouldn't call it so much a "war film" it's not a full on film about war -.-

You forgot the documentary movie "Red Dawn". I think "Hamburger Hill" was missed as well.
"Enemy at the Gates" and "Windtalkers" were both hot garbage. They should not be considered what so ever.

How has no one mentioned The Thin Red Line? Released the same year as Saving Private Ryan(a very good movie in it's own right) but far superior. |
My favorite war movie! Although I think BoB is the best thing out there.
Deer Hunter
All Quiet on the Western Front
Big Red One
Born on the Fourth of July
War related but not typical war movies:
Schindler's List
Come and See
Older wars:
Master and Commander
Glory
Gettysburg

Military Sci-fi, but very much war based, and a touch more war than scifi compared to the above mentioned Transformers/Terminator post

Anyone mentioned Battle of Britain? ok, I'll mention Battle of Britain.
Battle of Britain.
Lots of stars, lots of TAKA TAKA TAKA TAKA, NEEEEEEOOOOW, BOOM and FITOWWW!. Some sad bits (come in Blue 2). Spitfires, Hurricanes, Spanish Heinkels and merlin engined HA-1112-M1Ls playing BF109Es. Footage so good and non-repeatable nowadays that it's been re-used in lots of other movies. I used to be based at RAF Scampton, and for the 65th anniverary of the Dambuster raid we had a formal dining in night. The band providing cheesy music played the Luftwaffe March from the Battle of britain, which was a tad bizarre!
Glory
Good 80's movie. For me the music bought it up to another level.
Cross of Iron
Steiner!!!
