Merits get a lot of questions, so heres a complete guide to what they all are, hoe effective they are and when to use them.
(Inc) - incremental, is where you need an increasing amount of merits to get to the next stage of that certain merit type.
Incremental upgrades
Increase your max nerve bar by 1 - Cost: 1 merit (Inc)
Nerve is used within the game for doing crimes. It takes a lot of effort to gain nerve within the game by doing crimes and busts. People use their merits to upgrade it faster. The benefits of using your merits on nerve is that you can do more crimes, therefore it brings in more crime exp and better pay....faster. Although on the other hand, to make it some-what effective you will have to upgrade to 5/10 to gain 5 nerve, which means 15 merits. You don't get advised to be any certain level to do this upgrade. It does not affect your crime experience.
Usefulness: 8/10
Increase casino tokens gained each day +5 - Cost: 1 merit (Inc)
Casino tokens are used within the casino to play all the games (apart from poker) The games can be pretty tricky, and hard to win on. Using a merit would give you an extra 5 goes on a game, but is not really worth a merit. You increase your chances of increasing your networth (winnings from casino) But its only 5 tokens. Not really worth it.
Usefulness: 2/10
Increase critical hit rate +1% - Cost: 1 merit (Inc)
A critical hit, is a hit you perform upon someone in a fight, its where you hit your enemy for a large amount of damage. It can be very helpful fighting people with high HP and high amounts of defense. Although getting a crit hit in on someone isn't often. (I usually get a crit in, 1 in 12 attacks, based upon 1 hitting people) But even if you upgraded this to the max (10%) you would only gain an extra 10% which is only 1/10 chance extra. Still pretty low odds. Although I have heard it is pretty effective. Advantages are that you increase your chances of hitting someone with a crit. Disadvantages are that your chances are still pretty low.
Usefulness: 4/10
Increase awareness - Cost: 1 merit (Inc)
Improves your chances of finding an item whilst walking around the city. The chances of finding things around the city are very very low. Some people don't find things for months. Someone has upgraded this to 7/10 he told me he finds things pretty often each week. Although they are very useless, and not worth much. The advantage of using merits on this is that, you increase your chances of finding items in the city, which can consist of the rarest items including, stat enhancers and the famous RPG. Although the chances of finding something useful or worth something are too low to even bother. Be warned: Can vary depending on your activeness and so on.
Usefulness: 3/10
Masterful looting - Cost: 1 merit (Inc)
This is where you attack someone and mug them. Looting is the % of cash you mug your victim of. Without merits the average person mugs someone for around 1% of their current total of cash they have on them. Although some believe its a random between 1-10%. Although when upgrading no-one is sure about the % it increases your chances by, although I believe its around 0.1-3%. Advantages are that you gain more money from mugging people. Disadvantages costs energy to mug someone, if they have nothing on them then the merits are a waste.
Usefulness: 3/10
Improve stealth - Cost: 1 merit (Inc)
When you attack someone, it will either come up with 'someone' or 'yourname' what determines this is stealth. Its mainly based around dexterity, you have a high % of it will more than likely come up with 'someone'. Although its not a big issue, if you want it to be a secret attack and don't want your victim to know who it was this is a good upgrade, although it really doesn't matter. Advantages are that you get away with a lot more kills with people not knowing who it was. Disadvantages are that it only improves your chances so you still have the chance of your name appearing.
Usefulness: 1/10
Increase interest - Cost: 1 merit (Inc)
Interest is the % of cash you receive for banking your cash, very useful. Although you can find people who will bank your money too, so its a split choice, heres a table of the interest rates:

Thanks to tcbasic.com for the info
Usefulness: 8.5/10
Hospitalize for +10 minutes - Cost: 1 merit (Inc)
Once you've attacked your enemy, you gain the ability to hosp them for +10 mins for every upgrade you've bought. (+100 mins max). Advantages are that your opponent has to sit in the hosp for longer. Although, either way they are going to get out sometime, and extra hour'sh is 1 morph. Not worth it at all.
Usefulness: 1.5/10
Non-Incremental upgrades
(Recommended level)
Increase your life by 50 x level - Cost: 1 merit (unlimited)
Very useful has it adds 50 x your level to your total health. Helps in battles a lot, less chance of getting 1 hit. Can be used as many times as you want. Recommended level of use 20-25+. Although health is gained every time you level and can be gained via the medical job.
Usefulness: 8/10
Increase crime success rate - Cost: 1 merit (unlimited)
Helps (supposedly) increase your crime success rate, no idea how it works. Nothing but bad feedback from this.
Usefulness: 0/10
Respect bonus +10 on current faction - Cost: 1 merit (unlimited)
The only merit that can be sold, you join a faction that buy it of you, you then use it and it adds +10 respect to their total. Sells for a couple of 100-k. Useful and wanted by factions.
Usefulness: 2.5/10
Strength bonus +10 x level - Cost: 1 merit (unlimited)
Adds 10 x your level of strength to your total strength. Very useful for stat building and improving those low distributed areas of stats. Recommended level of use 25+.
Usefulness: 4/10
Defense bonus +10 x level - Cost: 1 merit (unlimited)
Adds 10 x your level of defense to your total strength. Very useful for stat building and improving those low distributed areas of stats. Recommended level of use 25+.
Usefulness: 4/10
Speed bonus +10 x level - Cost: 1 merit (unlimited)
Adds 10 x your level of speed to your total strength. Very useful for stat building and improving those low distributed areas of stats. Recommended level of use 25+.
Usefulness: 4/10
Dexterity bonus +10 x level - Cost: 1 merit (unlimited)
Adds 10 x your level of dexterity to your total strength. Very useful for stat building and improving those low distributed areas of stats. Recommended level of use 25+.
Usefulness: 4/10
Buyable items
Yasukuni sword - Cost: 10 merits
A rare sword, worth around $2-100mill. Not worth 10 merits, might aswell buy one.
Usefulness: 1/10
Xbox 360 - Cost: 2 merits
Everytime you press [play] uses 5 energy to help regenerate between 15-20 happiness, helpful but not worth 2 merits.
Usefulness: 5/10
Rusty Sword - Cost: 1 merit
Peice of junk, might aswell fight with your fists. Good for the cabinet though.
Usefulness: 1/10
Coat hanger - Cost: 1 merit
Allows you to rob cars via the GTA crimes, helpful. Although you can buy it for 50-100k off the market. Not worth a merit.
Usefulness: 7/10
Firewalk Virus - Cost: 1 merit
Needed for the level 25 mission, can also be bought and programmed via a computer in your items. Although you can buy them of the market for $20-50k.
Usefulness: 4/10

Forum Signature sizes!
Everyone is always asking about their sig sizes, or what the rules are so heres a tutorial, so no-one can ever moan about it again. I created templates for people to use, just right click on the image and copy it to where you want to create your signature (Photoshop, Paint, Gimp etc...)
Rules
- Do not use any profanities as it will result in a forum ban and possibly a game sentence. eg. Swearing, racism, discrimination etc....
- Flash files are allowed, but they cant be big files or have music playing on them.
- No advertising other games in your forum sig.
Consequences
Hold to the following rules above or you shall recieve...
First Offence: Warning issued
Second Offence: 3 - 7 day forum ban (depending on severity)
Third Offence: 8 - 14 day forum ban (depending on severity)
Fourth Offence: 15 - 30 day forum ban (depending on severity)
Further Offences: 30 - 365 day forum ban (depending on severity)
Note: If the forum sig is extreme, it may violate other decency policies and shall be punished accordingly.
