What upgrades do you recommend I spend my merits on?

Spend them on what every you think is best. Popular ones are life, critical hits, bank interest etc.
It's your choice and spending merits should be spent on what you do in the game

Hmmmmm. Seems like most people that find lots of good stuff have merits on awareness.

Just because plenty of people with merits on awareness don't find much doesn't mean it is pointless.
It's always gonna be about luck and activity, but you can hedge your bets.

I finally found some boxing gloves (290m) the other day, so I'm considering doing more awareness.
I'm a few days from finishing the coins education (flying or I'd say the name). I did my fair share of bemoaning, now I'm moving forward with action instead.

What I am saying is for such a low level who probably hasn't got much knowledge of Torn, advising him to spend merits on awareness this early on in the game is stupid because there is much more important things to spend merits on instead of awareness as he probably doesn't spend as much time on Torn so awareness wouldn't really be useful. I would suggest banking for long term money or life

They were saying it is pointless in general. You can tell I was addressing them because I used the keyword that they used, pointless.

But as to your point, all merits require him to actually play to pay off, so I don't know that I agree with you. He's poor so banking isn't gonna help much. And life won't help him greatly, he is not strong enough for it to matter much. Might as well increase his chances of getting a big payoff clicking city whenever he's on.

All forum posts I have seen so far told the same, but when I started I got the advice by my referrer & another torn-playing-guy I know from real-life that it would be useful at start to spend merits on Awareness & Education Length.

Of course I am not able to compare how things had been when I acted different, but I spent 6 or merits on Awareness & found 39 items so far, after some crap at beginning I found 3 explosive devices & 6, maybe 7 artifacts since I finished the certain edu courses.

So it might not affect the amount of items youŽll find, but what about the quality???

my thought was what am i going to be doing through the whole game? fighting and doing crimes.. so why not spend all my merits on my battle stats and crime success? makes sense right? and if you don't have a property with a vault, you'll want the bank to keep your money safe, might as well benefit from it. but education will always seem to take forever even with the merit boosts so i skipped that one. my focus is not money or stuff so i skipped awareness too. you get more exp from leaving people after attacking so i skipped looting too. just depends on whats most important to you in your torn life.

Well. Why is awareness merit not worth it?
