Not bothered about American English. We gave them the language. They think they discovered it...
|
We don't think we discovered it. We just perfected it. |
Happy to (dis)agree!
Just thought of probably the only Americanism now used which sounds great if you're an American saying it to apply to the US, but if you're a Brit applying it to us it sounds awful.
"Team GB"
No. It's the "Great Britain Team".
Like English Football Team or Scottish Rugby Team etc...
Or "Indian Summer"...
Whenever I hear Claire Balding say it I start twitching, and in the wrong way.

Grey, hey, whey, prey.
Gray, hay, way, pray.
Could be (and is) argued that both 'grey' and 'gray' make sense. At least no one spells it "greigh" like "neigh". English spelling in general is a bit silly, this isn't a thread about that. If we went for phonetic spelling it wouldn't be 'colour' or 'color' but 'kula' or something to that effect.
I still think American makes more sense for this game, since it's the more popular version around the globe and the game is loosely based in America, using dollars and such (and the travel times).

*cough* Latin *cough*
Latin came from Greek (maybe), Greek came from Phoenician.
Edit: Alphabet are a bit irrelevant. |
It all came from "Ugs" from the neanderthals anyway

It's a bit like real life... as an Englishman, I come accross an American tourist who speaks and writes differently. Why should Torn be different from that? I just think of it as different ppl speaking (writing in Torns case) in the way that they have learnt the "English" language. |
It's fine for the players to speak differently. In real life, a city will choose one or the other though, you won't see mixed signs in the street.
American English is the more standard option, I voted American. |
Not always... I used to live in a UK country called Wales, and not only are the street and road signs in Welsh and English, but many of the towns have different language names marked on signs and maps.
I voted keep it mixed.

My family are from Wales. They use both English and Welsh on the signs. Not a combination of the two. I think people would be annoyed if signs were like "remember to drive araf".

Based on the fact that we teach American English as a standard to foreigners. At least, in most of the countries I have worked in they do.

English teachers.
I'm sure some people request British English, but American is the standard taught in the places I have worked in.

I think the clue should very much be in the title.
Let me elaborate.
What version of French is the correct one? The one used by the French.
What version of Spanish is the correct one? The one used by the Spanish.
What version of German is the correct one? The one used by the Germans.
What version of Danish is the correct one? The one used by the Danish.
What version of latin is the correct one? The one used by latinos
So..
What version of English is the correct one? The one used by the English.

Play long enough and you get used to it
British words tend to have more letters than American words most likely because Americans prefer simplicity and maybe because of various cultural influences on the English language here in the states.
