So I need a sword. More actually, I need a drawing of a sword. I would like a gleaming and wonderful weapon to bequeath upon my fair maiden of a wife, Spazkid13, for putting on her profile page.

The sword I want is extremely specific, and I'm not sure anyone will have the patience to get it right. Luckily for those people, you don't have to be that patient to get paid. I will be paying lots of money for help, advice, and cool but incorrect submissions.

To be clear, I'm not starting a competition (yet), but rather, I'm asking the community at large how best to go about this, or if it's even possible. Here's what I want, in a nutshell:

I want a high resolution, vertical image of a slender and elegent scimitar, similar in shape to this:
BlazeScimitar3.jpg
But the ideal resolution of the actual scimitar should be closer to 800*1200 (yes, in that order. I want a vertical image).

I DON'T want typical scimitars (the ones with really thick blades or extreme curves). I don't want daggers, longswords, greatswords, or short and cartoony scimitars. I want a semi-realistic, sexy scimitar, like the one above. I've already combed google images, and the above is the best I could find.

Next, I want the final scimitar to look as if it were made of an unbroken piece of flawless, light blue ice, with a texture and color a bit like this ice cube.
HD-Wallpaper-Ice-Cube-Wallpaper.jpg
The handle and blade should be the same essential material, though texture and the like may differ.

I want the blade to be surrounded by a faint, swirling, frigid mist. The mist should look very real, like the way extremely cold metal mists when you put it in a warm room.

If possible, the depths of the blade should appear to swirl with snowy wind, as if they contain an arctic storm (as indeed they do!).

Please bear in mind, the effects do not necessarily have to be animated.

Well, I'll be offering payments on the order of a few million to people for helping me get the project started, first.

I think 200 million is a solid minimum for the final payout, which will be paid for the completed sword. That's not a guaranteed sum, however, which is why I'll be paying for other contributions as well (in the millions range).
If I get exactly what I want, the ballpark may get a little bit higher. I'm not going to quote a final maximum number just yet, but I'm open to input and advice (indeed, that's why I'm posting here). I don't want to set people up to expect a certain figure and then disappoint them if I DON'T get exactly what I want. However, it's safe to say, my final buy will be for at least 200 million, and I plan on spending much more than that on this project.

For example, I'm thinking I might start by offering between 1 and 10 million each for high resolution scimitar stocks that people might find, or for referring me to resources that can help me find them more effectively than Google or Deviant Art. The stocks must fit the following guidelines:

1) At least 1200x800 and very clear, high definition (not just expanded to fit those dimensions).
2) The stock's main feature is a scimitar, and the scimitar is unobstructed and entirely visible.
3) The blade is real or realistic, including multiple planes and facets, and a razor cutting edge. The handle has no guard or very little guard (see above image)
4) The edge is mostly a single curve, unbroken by serration or fancy designs.
5) The curve is gradual and the weapon looks practical and sexy (doesn't need to be perfect to get paid, just not ugly, flat, thick, short, heavily curved back or forwards, etc).

And most importantly, it has to actually be a scimitar (not a Katana, Falchion, or curved dagger). My definition of scimitar is: A long, single-edged blade which curves gradually along the length, tapering to a razor point at the end. The blade is narrower at the base that it is near the end, where it thickens slightly into a backwards-facing point behind the main cutting edge of the blade (for better slashing force behind a swing). This feature especially should be quite subtle and not overly pronounced (see the image above for an idea of what I mean).
The handle is best as a single, plain piece, without a guard.

Images which fit these requirements will earn at least 1-2 million. If someone finds (or refers me to a resource which helps me find) the scimitar I end up using as the stock, I'll pay that person 10 million.

I'm probably not going to pay for more than 5 or so stocks from a single person, and I'm hoping not to pay more than 20 million for this part of the competition in total.

Similarly, I'll probably pay between 1 and 10 million for Graphics related advice that helps me figure this out, or for referring artists who might be able to get this done for me. If you refer me the artist who ends up making the sword image that pays out 100 million (or more), I'll be paying you 10 million. It will be up to the artist to confirm any referral.

Btw, I will NOT be rejecting hand-drawn, painted, or otherwise real-world artwork right off. A solid stock is a solid stock, and if you think you can draw what I want, please do.

Edit: 200 million minimum prize for the final image. Minor helping payouts now cap at 10 million, instead of 5. Maybe this will generate a little more interest.

Heh, I suppose I do.

I'm hoping people will see the figures I'm offering and maybe decide it's worth it. I want this sword pretty bad, and I have several other projects I might want done here. If someone can impress me with this sword, they may earn much more than the original offer, in the end.

But I have a question. How hard (or impossible) is my request?

Is it beyond the value I'm offering? Or beyond the Graphics community entirely? I know quite little about graphics, which is why I'm posting this topic BEFORE I start a competition.

So, advice?

It *is* possible, but it's gonna be really hard. I think whoever does this will expect more payment, considering the amount of work they'll have to put in.

I'll take a stab at it eventually. Probably this weekend. Won't be the best. Won't be like Ronny's either though. It'll fit your specs. Cept maybe the ice part will be a bit crappy. There's better people to do this than myself. I never made anything better than 3 quarters decent.

Actually, I'll send you 1 mil, but NOT for the sword. Your shark sig is ludicrous and awesome, and I just spent ten minutes playing with it and laughing like a maniac. It's impossible to keep your mouse away from it's mouth for long.

Keep in mind, everybody, that I'm not quite sure that I'm accepting submissions yet. I don't yet have the stock I want, and I'm still trying to determine how best to do this. It seems, for example, that I should offer more money. I'm thinking 300 million for the sword, but I'm only paying that if I actually get the sword I want. And before I start the actual competition, I'd like to maybe talk to someone and get an idea of what to expect and how best to get what I want without pissing anybody off.

Well, what do you think is fair? I've upped the prize to 200m for now, but I would be willing to go higher if it's necessary. It'll just change my expectation for the schedule of some other things I'd like to commission, eventually. I have several ideas.

I would be willing to offer a minimum payout of 300 million, but in that case, I DO want a high resolution sword stock first, and I want top-quality artwork. Not too flashy, not to bright, and very real-looking. If I get what I want out of it, the actual payment will be higher than the minimum in any case, and I would be willing to negotiate with the final artist for the actual payment.

I need a stock first though, yes? Isn't the resolution and size of the final image limited by the quality of the original stock? The one I have above is a good scimitar, but the picture isn't ideal in size. I would like the final image to be more like 800x1200 or bigger, if possible.

Ok, a few questions for you all:

1) Should I post a list of things I do and do not want, accompanied by examples?
2) What sum of money, item, or other action/enticement might motivate the best artists on here to take a crack at this project?
3) Who could do this, and do it well?
4) What incentives or motivations would help encourage people to participate in this project?
5) What information or materials do I need to provide to help ensure that I get what I want?

This, I suppose, is the real purpose of this thread so far. I want to know how to do this properly.

So thank you all for your help. If I can get some concrete and clearly useful advice and/or help, I'll pay for it, since I don't want to waste anyone's time.

Does the above image fit the specs of the inside? Just made that in 2 minutes on gimp. It won't fit inside any sword and it's kind of randomish rather than following a set direction. Just want an idea of what you'd like

As for other people, not completely sure. Not too active in the graphics section. There's some really good graphic people in the forum already. Chances are they're seeing it as we speak

It's a cool effect, though it *might* be a bit much. I want to ensure that the blade maintains a measure of transparency. I'm not sure what this effect will look like in the actual blade, but it could probably be very subtle and still satisfy me. The transparent effect is more important than to storm, but some kind of appearant motion would be awesome.
It may be best to set the sword against a dark background, in which case I want to be sure that the effects and blade color aren't overly bright. Again, I'm not sure how this would look in an actual sword.
That said, the above manages both to look cold and as if in motion, which is awesome.

Well, sort of. It's a lot more like the way your breath mists on a very cold day. Thin and wispy, and only just visible, but distinctly there. I don't want a solid mist surrounding the weapon, but more like wisps of mist rising off of it. They should not be very bright or solid.

This is good. If you have more questions, PLEASE feel free to ask. I'm going to try to find more images to show what I want a little better, I think, and to show what I really don't want. That will probably have to wait until tomorrow afternoon, though. It's late, and I have tests to study for.
