World War Side Effect: Trading and Muggings
By The_Accountant
Date: 09/26/2013

The World War competition has come again and to quote the Mayor Chedburn himself, its that time of year to Choose your flags wisely, meet new friends, and fight alongside each other for victory! There is, however, a side effect to the contest that many citizens do not recognize, while others have foreseen. Many items throughout the city have a much greater use over the course of the World War, causing their value to increase amidst the competition. The prices of drugs, meds, and various other items of use during the war are greatly influenced by this. The price of Vicodin, for example, had been floating around $165,000 on the market. During the first hours of competition, the price skyrocketed to above $340,000. Citizens without enough stock to last through the competition panicked and the markets responded. The situation settled after several hours of uproar and the price returned to slightly above the norm. Having no government regulations on the item market, prices are purely dependent on the supply and demand of items and Torn City economics, and many citizens take advantage of this knowledge.

Being a renowned trader in Torn City, I personally have looked forward to this competition for this very side effect of the contest. I regularly follow the prices of many items throughout the city looking for pricing trends and good deals to buy and sell items in hopes of turning profits and increasing my wealth. I had stocked up a stash of 151 Feathery Hotel Coupons (FHCs) in preparation of this years World War. I projected this item to be heavily used during the month and that its value would increase over the duration of the competition. I patiently waited over the first 9-10 days of the World War, watching the prices of FHCs rise on the market. My mouth began to water and I could taste a sweet $100+ million profit if the pricing trend continued and I was to sell my stash. Once the price surpassed $18 million, I began to sell, and play the market game with Bayinnaung [550363] and Stu [78284] and the many other citizens trying to sell their FHCs. While trading, I had to regularly buy cheaper FHCs or drop my price, because we all know, the cheapest sells easiest. I had to temporarily close my Bazaar at times and take flights to the UK, Canada, Cayman Islands, and Mexico, to avoid potential muggers as selling high value items tend to attract attention.

My profits were great and I had experienced no mishaps until the morning of Wednesday, September 18. My good fortunes nearly turned sour by some hard working muggers, Legendary [1292128] and Will_i_am [1030826]. I opened my Bazaar and ventured to my airstrip. I decided against a longer flight to one of my favorite destinations and took a short flight to Mexico. I planned to make a quick stop, buy some Dahlia, avoid any pesky muggers, and return to Torn City to sell my remaining stock of FHCs. During that short flight I had over $1.2 billion in sales from my bazaar, and within minutes or even seconds of me landing in Mexico, Will_i_am mugged you and stole $26,740,885 from your wallet. Just 13 minutes later, Legendary mugged you and stole $37,637,239 from your wallet. I was down, beaten, and saddened, but I had some fight in me still and desperately wanted to project that hard earned cash. I picked myself up and made a dash for my plane and nearly did not make it, Will_i_am attacked you and lost - The_Accountant hit with their BT MP9 in the head for 1657032 damage. 18 minutes later I landed in the city and went straight to my company to deposit my funds. I was chased and attacked before I could make it, Legendary attacked you and lost - The_Accountant hit with their BT MP9 in the left thigh for 311454 damage. I then safely deposited my funds into my company, popped a bottle of champagne, took a shot of tequila, downed a bottle of beer, and popped a vicodin to fight for my countrys flag. What a day! So over my 4 days of trading FHCs during this years World War, I sold 553 FHCs at an average price of $17,916,474 for over $120 million in profit. Less the $64 million I lost from muggings, I netted over $56 million from these FHC sales.

Was it worth it, you ask? Heck yeah it was!

End.

If Ke$ha knew BodyBagger and Torn City, her quote-unquote Hit Song debut single from 2009 probably would have started off a little differently....

Wake up in the morning feeling like BodyBagger
(Hey, what up girl?)
Grab up my glasses, I'm out the door, I'm gonna hit Torn City
(Let's go)
Before I leave, brush my teeth with a Bottle of Stinky Swamp Punch
'Cause when I leave for the night, I ain't coming back

I'm talking Stat Enhancers out our wazoos, wazoos
Trying on all our Hazmat suits, suits
TC Peeps blowing up our mailboxes, mailboxes
Drop-topping, DJ-Jewelz playing our favorite CDs
Pulling up to the General Discussion forum parties
Trying to get a little bit tipsy

Don't stop, make it pop
DJ, blow my speakers up
Tonight, I'mma fight
'Til we see the sunlight
Tick tock on the clock
But the party don't stop, no

Traders insight of Torn
By Moguai
Date: 10/11/2013

First of all, I want to introduce myself; I'm Moguai. I'm not going to say I'm the best or I'm the most well-known trader, but I can say for sure I'm up there! With 1,865 trades made (and counting!) bazaar income of just over $51bn spread over 15,630 bazaar sales (that's an average sale price of $3.3m per item), over 450k points traded and a trading thread with over 242k views. But most important, I have the Trader user title!

Many people look in awe at some of Torn's big traders out there, with their large amounts of cash, huge array of valuable items (often in copious amounts!) and their blinged out private islands. Now there are other small time traders who are desperately trying to reach those levels, and we would expect different traders use different techniques in how they go about their business.

I'm not going to write a How to trade guide, because there is no such thing. Basic economics and business theory explains this, I shouldn't need to run through that here, but there certainly is a noticeable difference between the experienced traders and the less experienced traders out there. That doesn't go to say that experienced traders are richer than the less experienced traders with so many other ways to get rich nowadays, noticeably the casino, bookies and the stock market (I won't go into detail on the stock market, I will cover that a later article).

I'm not going to put it into black and white what that key difference is between those different types of traders (experienced and non-experienced) because that just gets into too much detail. What I can say is that when you trade in Torn you are essentially investing your money into something and hoping to make money out of it one way or another, throughout this you need to look at the long term. This long term philosophy also applies in real life investments, for example the recommended period to hold a share on a stock market is between 5-10 years. I'm not saying you should hold your Torn investments for 5-10 years as the medium-long-term, but you need to put that into perspective within Torn.

There is also loads more little techniques and methods that you can use to get a deal done, but I wont bore you with them!

To finish off, if you're interested I'm offering an exclusive How to trade in Torn guide which will guarantee rich success in your Torn life, for a very competitive price. (Just kidding!)

Yeah I actually look at the number of views someone's trading thread has when I am looking to sell something of high value. Higher number of views is a good indication of good and safe trading.

Over 200,000 views is pretty rare. I think only 3 individual people have that in the trading forum (Moguai, HT-Supermikk, and BodyBagger), and I guess 1 more if you count the flower thread ;P
3-4 of us have over 170,000 views and are nearing 200k, and a decent amount have over 50,000 views, so that is a good sign of an established TORN City trader..

Drugs, rehab, and stuff
By 0__o
Date: 10/16/2013

Torn City has one of the highest drug abuse rates around the world, most of these drugs have been smuggled in from abroad and sold on underground markets. It has also been speculated that there are auction markets that sell drugs as well as weapons and other illegal paraphernalia. Government statistics showing a 24 hour snapshot of Torn Citys stats can sometimes show over 500 million crimes being committed and an excess of 20 million jail sentences given out.

There are over 150,000 people out of work and unsurprisingly TC Courts are the lowest staffed company in the entire city. The city has many notorious drug dealers, some who hire people to transport the drugs and others who cut out the middle man to increase profit but increase risk too. Recently, according to official archives from an independent statistical analyst Nerbas, there have been two drug dealers who have exceeded 10,000 successful drug deals. Rumor has it that one of them, who goes by the alias Bogie, works under Mayor Chedburns authority!

One of the most fundamental rules in economics is supply and demand. The drug market is only booming because of the massive amount of consumption. My first visit was to the local TC hospital, the most intense cases, as usual, were related to the drug Alprazolam, known in the city as Xanax. These people, if not revived, could be in hospital for over 80 excruciating hours, many of them re-admitted within a few weeks. Although Torn city has a bad habit for drugs, they are mainly used as stimulants. One Xanax tablet is said to be able to increase gym efficiency by up to 250% for some people, which is probably why people are paying over $800,000 on the market for them.

Is the city doing anything about this? There is a rehabilitation centre located in Switzerland which can completely clear a person of any addiction but at a cost. Constant abusers of drugs will use rehab momentarily and then get back to bad habits thereafter. To combat this culture, rehab prices increase each time you rehab, the price will double after roughly 400 sessions with each one costing $250,000. In August 2006, Carl Truscott, an NPC, burned down Rehab and $2.5 billion dollars were donated by the Torn community to rebuild this important building which many people were reliant upon.

The Rehab centre is arguably the single most important sinkhole for cash in the game, and it can be said that without all these drug abusers the Torn economy would fall. Rehab is a private institution which relies on people visiting and paying them for a fix. It is this drug culture which creates the huge volumes of revenue this institute pockets. They are closely linked with Chedburn himself and I think if there was more focus on airport security drug related crimes would decrease. That said, I do not think that money will be a barrier any time soon for consumers of drugs. There is however concerns amongst consumers that the exponential increase in rehab prices will one day catch up with them all, whereby even they will feel the bite.
