Torn's drug problem
By CatHead
Date: 02/06/2014

Drugs are a thorn in our fair city of Torn's side. Or so says the mayor who, having been kidnapped multiple times by drug fueled gangsters, has finally revealed the first step in her plan to purge Torn of drugs. In a press release conference she held last week she stated, "The residents of Torn City don't seem to understand the risks involved. We've put posters up around the city, warning of the Mal-effects of drugs and they are being ignored."

In her 30 minute conference she outlined her views of the problem, which included hospitalizations from both overdoses and what has been coined as The Glass Door Effect (TGDE). TGDE has caused a problem for many visitors to Gym Alley, suffering from withdrawal symptoms of a cocktail of drugs, who simply are not able to differentiate the glass from air. Drug users walk through glass doors. Overdoses pose a far more serious perdicament, confining careless users to hospital for days of treatment. Teams of specialist brain surgeons spend precious energy resuscitating hundreds of people each day.

"The cause of the addiction must be the citizens' extensive travels abroad," proposed the mayor. While some tourists return with flowers and souvenirs, drug smugglers bring in thousands of pills every day, making millions of dollars and replenishing their factions' armories. Torrents of tourists flood Switzerland to make use of their incomparable rehabilitation centers.

But the mayor hasn't tightened airport security, no. She divulged a controversial agreement with the Swiss staff that after an undisclosed number of visits, the cost of rehab will rise, thus forcing the population to consider the drugs that they consume.

Some members of the public are relieved to have such measures put in place. _Cynic_, one of the city's strongest drug-free residents, said, "Its about time they make druggies pay! All they do is go around mugging hard working folks and spending it on damn drugs!"

Others are outraged. Citizens knew of the rehab cost increases but they hadn't suspected that it was the mayor's deed nor did they realize how expensive their habit would become. Rehab has already become too dear for some of the most prolific drug users and it seems like the mayor's plan may be successful in curbing drug abuse in the future...

Company hack... BLAH!

Company hack... BLAH!

Once upon a time, I owned a company just for the job specials and to use it for a safe place to stash my cash! I held the SYS stock benefit which entitled me to receive supreme firewall software, keeping me safe from anyone employed in the Software Corporation using the intricate hack on my company to steal a small % of my company cash. And I held this stock benefit for well over a year while I was director of a 5 star company. During that time, I had a lot more cash than I do now. I regularly kept anywhere between $1 billion and $8 billion in my company funds. Back in November 2013 as I was getting lower on my stash of cash, I noticed the stock price of SYS rising greatly. I decided to go for it and sell the stock and take a huge profit, thinking surely no one will know that I sold the stock and know to hack my company. I placed my shares for sale through the stock market system and never advertised in the forums, newspapers, or anywhere. And several days later, the full benefit block sold and I made nearly $500m off the sale. My company funds were lower than what I was used to, but they were still in the billions. Just a few hours later after my stock sold, I received this message in my company news, ALlour has used Intricate Hack against the company. $150,000,007 was stolen. -player ID: 998507- Now, come on, seriously? Yes, I can conceivably see, someone going through a list of 5 star companies trying to hack until they find a company without the SYS benefit. But that is risky to use all those job points on random chance. I suspected foul play. I have no idea how, but there must be some way to see stock sales or a listing of company directors with and without SYS, or something. I dont know. So I looked up this guys profile and looked at his stats very few honors and medals for his age of 1,800+ days, very low activity, almost no game play other than some revives and crimes. What jumped out to me was the bounties section. Bounties place = 3. Spent on bounties = $117,470,000. To me, thats pretty clear foul play is involved somehow. Multi? Some way to view things others cant see? Again, I dont know. I imagine the bounties were a way to transfer funds in prior similar hacks from this player. I reported the player and then let it go and didnt think about it for a while. So I had this player on my Black List (obviously), and I just randomly decided to look him up again a few days ago. In federal jail for 999 days, Account marked for deletion. For one, I am glad this account is in fed and marked for deletion. I do wish I knew what the foul play was, if it was a multi or what. Does it make you wonder how many fake accounts are out there for this kind of purpose? And I know I made $500m on the sale of the stock benefit and that $150m isnt a horrible loss to undertake at my level, but it does suck to lose out on that large amount of cash just due to foul play. I choose to keep my name and ID private for privacy reasons, please respect my wish with this story.

Top 10: You Known You're Addicted To TORN When

I wanted to create a top 10 list, kind of similar to those that David Letterman puts together on his night show (for those that are familiar with this work). I ran a Fun & Games thread for just under 4 weeks in which I asked the community to reply with your best answer to complete this sentence, You know youre addicted to TORN when _______. I received well over 100 responses during this time. I sent out 90 Bits n Bobs items to those individuals that participated. Additionally, Lottery vouchers were awarded and sent out to the individuals that posted a reply that made it into the FINAL Top 10 List.

Congrats to the winners!
Special compliments to Penicillin for providing the best response imo, because yes, sometimes a picture does say it best and to kpg for providing 2 of the top 10 responses. Congrats!

Congrats again to the winners, and thank you to all who responded and contributed! There were many honorable mentions and other good responses. I did not really have criteria for picking the top 10, but I was mainly looking for humor and good examples of addictions in making my choices. If you wish to see some of the other answers, you may visit the Fun & Games forum thread Top 10: You Known You're Addicted To TORN When. The url is Clicky ----> http://www.torn.com/forums.php?forumID=13&ID=15831816

What do you think of this list? Does it represent the majority of the TORN addictions you have experienced or witnessed? Feel free to add to the discussion any of your personal stories of TORN addiction.

The Zombie Devastation
By Ebony
Date: 12/2/2013

Over the last month I kept track of the zombie populations throughout the Torn of the Dead competition. It started around 18:00 of November 5th with the infection of about 40 newcomers to the city, who must have cut themselves on something quite unsavory while digging around in the city dump. Well, that's my theory on how it started anyway.

44233732-6376-d66f-1481869.png

For four days, the infection barely spread at all, at a meager rate of 1.5 people an hour, on average. The zombies continued to languish for six more days with the vigilant civilians ever on guard against the zombie threat, willing to risk life and limb to keep Torn City's streets safe... or, more likely, many were after the "points" one could acquire from putting the fallen citizens of Torn back to rest. Still, others may have been seeking the merits to slay fifty zombies, and some other more ambitious may have been hoping to halt the spread of the infection altogether.

For about seventeen more days, the zombie population lurched forward ever so slowly, but steadily. During this time period, a modest 10 to 20 civilians were infected each hour. Victory was in sight! At the rate things were going, less than 8,000 civilians would likely be infected! But all that changed on November 27th, a day all the civilians of Torn City will revile for years to come.

At around 13:00 - 14:00, something terrible happened: Mayor Chedburn, who had been experimenting on a vaccine to prevent a zombie outbreak next year, accidentally infected some of the strongest citizens in Torn City! Needless to say, it backfired horribly. These champions of Torn, now hungering for flesh, ambushed the civilians from behind their own defenses! Infection spread like wildfire, with up to 800 new infections per hour.

As it became clear that the city was doomed once again, the citizens of Torn clamored to hide in the overcrowded hospitals, while others took to the skies, ever thankful that the airline security could keep those pesky zombies off the planes. In the end, only 1,338 citizens survived the outbreak, a mere 4.0%, and just one shy of being quite a "leet" bunch. I suspect Mayor Chedburn has much to do in preparation for any possible zombie outbreaks next year, but one thing is certain: if it looks like a victory has been given too easily, it can just as easily be snatched away!

The Life of a Re-Starter
By NinjaNutt330
Date: 11/05/2013

During my first stint on Torn, I achieved a lot of success. I owned a couple PI's, had every stock imaginable, enough xanax/FHCs/points to train everyday, and had the drug-inflated stats. Unfortunately, things got a little dull for me on Torn, I started gambling BIG time, and while I lost all my "on-hand" cash, I had enough assets to keep me going on Torn for the rest of my days. But I was bored, so, at over 4 years old, almost 1b in stats, and owning everything imaginable, I did the unthinkable: I started over.

Many things have changed over the years, but Torn was the same as I remember. Yes, training is a little different, but crimes are the same. I miss the old battle system, the old graphics, and when parachutes and skateboards sold for 10m. I miss buying cheap points, and living in a mansion for a year, because it was a great property, and owning anything more was considered pretty rare. I miss the old stock system, where you could make a fortune in about an hour. I miss some of the old people, but nonetheless, I came back because I missed Torn in general.

So here I sit, a Level 5 with under 1k stats, virtually no cash, and back in my mansion. People look at me on IRC and say "How could you just give all your stuff away and restart?" "It must suck to be broke again." Yet, when I look at life on Torn, I got new objectives, new goals, and actually things to do besides war and train. When I look at my life on Torn, back as a nubcake, I couldn't be happier....

World War Side Effect: Trading and Muggings
By The_Accountant
Date: 09/26/2013

The World War competition has come again and to quote the Mayor Chedburn himself, its that time of year to Choose your flags wisely, meet new friends, and fight alongside each other for victory! There is, however, a side effect to the contest that many citizens do not recognize, while others have foreseen. Many items throughout the city have a much greater use over the course of the World War, causing their value to increase amidst the competition. The prices of drugs, meds, and various other items of use during the war are greatly influenced by this. The price of Vicodin, for example, had been floating around $165,000 on the market. During the first hours of competition, the price skyrocketed to above $340,000. Citizens without enough stock to last through the competition panicked and the markets responded. The situation settled after several hours of uproar and the price returned to slightly above the norm. Having no government regulations on the item market, prices are purely dependent on the supply and demand of items and Torn City economics, and many citizens take advantage of this knowledge.

Being a renowned trader in Torn City, I personally have looked forward to this competition for this very side effect of the contest. I regularly follow the prices of many items throughout the city looking for pricing trends and good deals to buy and sell items in hopes of turning profits and increasing my wealth. I had stocked up a stash of 151 Feathery Hotel Coupons (FHCs) in preparation of this years World War. I projected this item to be heavily used during the month and that its value would increase over the duration of the competition. I patiently waited over the first 9-10 days of the World War, watching the prices of FHCs rise on the market. My mouth began to water and I could taste a sweet $100+ million profit if the pricing trend continued and I was to sell my stash. Once the price surpassed $18 million, I began to sell, and play the market game with Bayinnaung [550363] and Stu [78284] and the many other citizens trying to sell their FHCs. While trading, I had to regularly buy cheaper FHCs or drop my price, because we all know, the cheapest sells easiest. I had to temporarily close my Bazaar at times and take flights to the UK, Canada, Cayman Islands, and Mexico, to avoid potential muggers as selling high value items tend to attract attention.

My profits were great and I had experienced no mishaps until the morning of Wednesday, September 18. My good fortunes nearly turned sour by some hard working muggers, Legendary [1292128] and Will_i_am [1030826]. I opened my Bazaar and ventured to my airstrip. I decided against a longer flight to one of my favorite destinations and took a short flight to Mexico. I planned to make a quick stop, buy some Dahlia, avoid any pesky muggers, and return to Torn City to sell my remaining stock of FHCs. During that short flight I had over $1.2 billion in sales from my bazaar, and within minutes or even seconds of me landing in Mexico, Will_i_am mugged you and stole $26,740,885 from your wallet. Just 13 minutes later, Legendary mugged you and stole $37,637,239 from your wallet. I was down, beaten, and saddened, but I had some fight in me still and desperately wanted to project that hard earned cash. I picked myself up and made a dash for my plane and nearly did not make it, Will_i_am attacked you and lost - The_Accountant hit with their BT MP9 in the head for 1657032 damage. 18 minutes later I landed in the city and went straight to my company to deposit my funds. I was chased and attacked before I could make it, Legendary attacked you and lost - The_Accountant hit with their BT MP9 in the left thigh for 311454 damage. I then safely deposited my funds into my company, popped a bottle of champagne, took a shot of tequila, downed a bottle of beer, and popped a vicodin to fight for my countrys flag. What a day! So over my 4 days of trading FHCs during this years World War, I sold 553 FHCs at an average price of $17,916,474 for over $120 million in profit. Less the $64 million I lost from muggings, I netted over $56 million from these FHC sales.

Was it worth it, you ask? Heck yeah it was!

End.

on a regular Basis, see the 3rd post in this thread for stories and ideas that the community would like to hear about.... quoted below also, but I will maintain and update that post as frequently as I can.

By The_Accountant [795412]
Short/personal stories I am looking for.....
and a place to list other topics the community would like to read a story about.

*if you have a story idea you would like to hear about or read about from someone in the Torn community but don't feel you have the ability or experience to write it yourself, send me a message with your idea. Thanks*

1- a day in the life of a poker player, rags to riches, or simple results and chats from a day at the tables
2- a story from one of the HoF faction leaders, about what it takes to run and recruit and maintain a successful, fun, powerful faction
3- someone who recently bought a company or faction, the decision making process, the results
