These titles could change weekly when your stats cause the chane.
You’ll receive an event whenever your title changes, which happens every week maximum. You can view your current title at ‘Home’, and see other peoples titles on their profiles. The title works as an adaption to your rank, I.e. “Heroic Soldier”. - ched

From what I gather, then, perhaps you'd be a sage if you'd dealt less damage. But since your damage dealt puts you in a higher ranking than your logins- you are a damage dealer.
These awards seem to be for what you excell at most compared to other players.
Could be wrong but that theory makes sense to me.

Love these new titles, for the pure fact of their look, I also like how much they annoy some people haha, I am unhappy that they are only going towards a silly new hall of fame system, could have linked to a better update tbh..

I popped an epi and hit some poor pleb for 88 mil whilst picking off a few bounties earlier today - should be enough to trigger a change in title as I suspect my 20k-odd respect gained would probably have me at the lower end of the scale for a soldier (also somewhere between 4 and 5 billion damage dealt so I should have that covered).

Lol, I got the investor title as well, I have 100 mil in bank and ZERO stocks. It has nothing to do with how much you have compared to other players but it is related to how much you have in relation to your other stats (your own stats)

How is it that people think they can explain these titles when Ched can't even explain them to us. If the games owner can't explain it to were you can understand it how is that people are actually believing the explanations given in this thread.

But your rank in stalemates is higher than your rank for items set and accuracy.
Therefor, you get tank.
Trust me.. I ain't happy with the tite samaritan as I am pretty high up on that rank

My rank is a merchant which will probably not change in the overall scheme of things for years
Interestingly though
I bought a lot of items in my first year which ha caused this ranking, and not bought many in the past 2-3 years
So my playing style in my first year supersedes a more even playing style in the 2-3 years since

It's a shame the attacking/missing NPCs all get the deserter title, would be interesting to see what sort of titles we'd be getting there when all they do is get attacked... Although my guess would be punching bag for most of them x.x

Well, I got the "Merchant" title. However, I've bought fairly few items from the market. Morever, the term "Merchant" implies selling, not just buying from the market. So perhaps (unless I missed the proof somewhere in this thread, in which case my apologies) that Merchant actually refers to a high number of items SOLD on the market.
I kinda like that ched didn't offer a description for most of the titles. It lets people have fun trying to figure out how to get them, rather than just using the descriptions to gun for one in particular.
