Does it still do this when there is events? I've never deleted my events, but I would think there would be no background when there is none. I really don't see why there would need to be.
Edit: I deleted all of my 73 trillion events (lag will probably cease now ) and there is no background on mine either. I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be like that, but I will leave the bug open to make sure.
