Not sure if I read it correctly as I clicked too fast and was unable to take a screenshot.

But, I spent my first merit to decrease education length. When it came to the confirm screen Im sure it said something like "are you sure you want to spend 1 merit to increase education length" instead of "decrease".

Forgive me if Im wrong, but Im certain thats what it said?

Are you sure you want to spend 1 merit on your Education Length upgrade?

This upgrade will decrease the amount of days you have to wait to complete an education course.
This upgrade will start working on the next education course you start.

Spend some time making sure that this is the upgrade you want.
Resetting your merit upgrades can be expensive if you change your mind later.

It indeed does say that. But you are increasing the merit-tree (if you will), so the sentence does make sense.
