Personally I don't see how it could be since Pakistani is a nationality not a race. Unless of course it was used as an insult for someone being black.

People usually aren't as thoughtful as you, and it is often misinterpreted as a race. Bigots tend to be idiots anyhow, and use "Paki" to be racist. So pretty much although it isn't a race in itself, it's still usually directed in that manner.. It's the thought that counts.

My thoughts exactly, I would never use Paki as an insult only as a shortened term for Pakistani. no different than Brit, Aussie or Scot.

In modern British usage "Paki" is typically used in a derogatory way as a label for all South Asians, including Indians, Afghans and Bangladeshis. Taken from Wiktitionary

It's not the word, it's the connotation. Look at the historical use of the word and you might begin to see why it can be offensive. Don't get me wrong, I'm always using words that could be considered racial slurs, but I do so to have a laugh with the people that those slurs would usually be aimed at in an insulting way. Words are what you make them.

I know people tend to use it as a derogatory word but a word can only be racist is you use it in a racial concept.

True as I have Pakistani friends that use it all the time casually.

Inasmuch as these people have chosen to call themselves 'the Pure', which is fairly presumptuous, I rather think that they will have to accept the occasional derogation.

Inasmuch as the Bengals have not done so, it is absurd to aim it at them.

Pakistani is of course an absrdity - like Englishlanders.

I'm not sure why people get offended by these words... they in themselves are not offensive, people should embrace them. People from NZ are commonly referred to as 'kiwis' which is a flightless bird which was nearly wiped out completely (extinct), if you look into it too much you would deem it offensive.

People cry and whinge way to easily these days.

Again it is in which context it's being used in for example people only get offended if people use it in a hateful way

Not sure where you are from but unfortunately not in English law where it does not matter a hoot what 'you make them'. All that matters is how the word is received - and not just by the person you are talking to or about, it matters what anyone within hearing thinks of what you say. Use the word 'Paki' in any work situation and you will be disciplined or sacked. The best you can hope for is to be sent on an equality and diversity course and forgo promotion for 12 months.

We have a lot of people like you who 'have a laugh' by using racial slurs at work. The people being targetted in those 'jokes' keep quiet for 6 - 12 months then make a complaint and are paid out £20k+. It is a brave man in the UK who 'has a laugh' in such a way anymore.

Doesn't sound that way to me. Have you read the other posts?

It sounds as though if you use the word at all someone is bound to get upset and tell on you.

It also depends on personal opinion some people take offence while overs just brush it off as a nickname
