First news story about Fukushima.

It's really not, unless your idea of 'news' is Fox.

The 'serious' UK media has been covering it since it happened, and in the last couple of weeks there have been daily updates.

BBC News, Aug 22, 2013: The worsening situation at Fukushima has prompted a former Japanese ambassador to Switzerland to call for the withdrawal of Tokyos Olympic bid. In a letter to the UN secretary general, Mitsuhei Murata says the official radiation figures published by Tepco cannot be trusted. He says he is extremely worried about the lack of a sense of crisis in Japan and abroad.

Time, Aug 22, 2013: Its time we faced the danger, said Takashi Hirose, a writer shocked by the under-reported radiation levels he found on recent trip into the evacuation zone. So many terrible things are not being reported in the news.

BBC News, Aug 22, 2013: Fukushima leak is much worse than we were led to believe [...] A nuclear expert [Mycle Schneider] has told the BBC that he believes the current water leaks at Fukushima are much worse than the authorities have stated. [...] He says water is leaking out all over the site and there are no accurate figures for radiation levels. [...] some nuclear experts are concerned that the problem is a good deal worse than either Tepco or the Japanese government are willing to admit.

Irish Times, Aug 21, 2013: Cover-up [....] Many experts believe Japans government continues to underestimate the cost and complexity of the decommissioning, and that Tepco has been systematically covering up problems.

Bloomberg, Aug 21, 2013: At least one commissioner at the regulator questioned the accuracy of data being released by operator Tokyo Electric Power Co. (9501) and whether the incident had been fully reported. [] This INES evaluation is based on the 300-ton leak, but I really wonder if we can trust data provided by Tepco, Toyoshi Fuketa, a commissioner at the NRA, said at a meeting in Tokyo today. I really wonder if we should judge based on Tepcos data.Media now exposing Fukushima cover-up: So many terrible things are not being reported Official radiation figures cannot be trusted Regulator suspects Tepco giving false data Problems much worse than officials claim

How dangerous are 300 cubic meters of poisoned water disgorged into an ocean, even on a daily base?

I'm absolutely no friend of nuclear power, but the discharge of radioactive contaminated water into a major ocean is just about the least scary disaster involving a nuclear reactor I can think of.

It certainly is once again proof that nuclear reactors are dicey and unpredictable, but this is not exactly a China Syndrome.

So I asked what the volume of that ocean is.
Answer: 6.6×108 km3 (cubic kilometers); (NOAA National Geophysical Data Center 2010).

'I really wonder' amounts to idle speculation.

Damn thing cost the life of a bunch of volunteers to turn it off last timer, it is going to be decommisioned, so why don't you keep your idle speculation closely locked inside of your skull?

"so why don't you keep your idle speculation closely locked inside of your skull?"

Its not me speculating. I'm just highlighting a problem that most people are unaware of.

Worst-case scenario at Fukushima

The Japanese Nuclear Regulation Authority said the cascading series of radioactive water leaks from the Fukushima plant is approaching a worst case scenario.

[Tepco] warned there may be hundreds more tanks like [the one leaking] on the site of the 2011 meltdown.

We cannot waste even a minute, [Chairman of the Japan Nuclear Regulation Authority Shunichi Tanaka] said. This is what we have been fearing. [...]

Atsunao Marui, director of research at Japans National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, said the situation is likely to get worse.

Its important to think of the worst-case scenario, he said.

If you are just bighlightibg a problem you can use propeer technocratic language.

Which you don't.

Instad, a bunch of 'suggestive' phrasings and leading questions. Shit-stirring.

Dr. Goebbels, much?

If you want to suggest that controlled nuclear bombs - which is an adequate way of describing nuclear reactors - represent fundamentally bat-shit crazy ides, then go right ahead.
After all, I agree that the idea is fundamentally stupid.

And be blunt in accepting and stating that
A] our energy needs will be met through a wide range of sources, and not by 1 [ cwrtainly not by only solar power, which does not work too well in nocturnal conditions. ]
B] the exploitation of unrenewable resources such as oil will and shall continue until rendered economically unviable. Obviously this includes fracking.

I am well aware of the tendency of eco-warriors to stir shit with bogus informatin.
Remember Brent Spar.

The overestimation of the contents of the Brent Spar damaged the credibility of Greenpeace in their wider campaigns. They were criticised in an editorial column in the scientific journal Nature for their lack of interest in facts[12]. Greenpeace moved to distance itself from its "5500 tonnes" claim, after the Brent Spar argument was won, and because of this has been accused of indulging in historical revisionism, after issuing statements such as "In the absence of a full inventory, Greenpeace, during our occupation, attempted to find out what was on the Brent Spar. The estimates resulting from this sampling were in no way central to the campaign...". This allegation has also been levelled at individuals, such as Lord Melchett, executive director of Greenpeace UK, who wrote in New Scientist magazine, "Greenpeace made mistakes too. We allowed ourselves to follow the agenda set by the Department of Trade and Industry, Shell and the media too often getting into arguments about the potential toxicity of the Spar."

Darth go away.
Your just here to get a reaction. With name calling etc.
You obviously haven't read the entire thread.

I've been talking about the massive problems that Fukushima faces for over a year now and the lies that tepco have tried to pass as truths.
This post was started 2 weeks before news of the ocean leak was reported.
The idea was to remind people that Fukushima is still facing massive problems and has the potential to be the worst man made disaster in the history of mankind..

Nuclear is and always shall be the most dangerous form of energy production....great when it all works (except the problem of storing spent fuel rods...but hey we'll figure that out later) the problems start when man gets involved, makes mistakes and hey presto the geenie is out of the the bottle, we have no way of getting it back into the bottle and people start to die.

LOLWUT, Mister Negative Score?

Worst man made disaster consists of leaking 300 cubic meters in an ocean of umpten quadrillion cubic kilometers?

I imagine that you think of yourself as Wikileaks or the Guardian - pox be upon such!
As far as I am concerned, people like that belong in Gitmo.

Actually, the problem started when a tsunami hit the coast where the Tepco idiots built this power plant, and the other idiots known as politicians signed off on letting it be built... nuclear power is fine, so long as corner-cutting-bean-counters don't trump solid engineering and planning.

Worst man made disaster? Give it 500 years, and let's talk.

But it had to be economically viable in a long forgotten age when oil wss still cheap while Japanese decision-makers could still remember naval blockades. The Island Empire of the East has the same unavoidable hangups about that - naval blockades - as the UK has.

They'll build a large bunch of wind turbines and such now. But the part where energy consumption gets reduced - forget about that.
