| Why take it upon yourself to make an app? Simply put... I would like a job here. In Ched's latest announcement about a mobile version of the website, he quoted a ridiculous number of $500,000 for cost. Staff, feel free to contact me for the price, I can guarantee my full time services for a lot cheaper. |
Actually that price sounds about right to me. The technical implementation of Torn is far from what I'd consider 'hacky'. Creating an app that parses html is pretty hacky, I doubt Chedburn would let something like this make it to a production environment. Not that your app or code is terrible or anything but a hacky solution is a hacky solution.
To do it right you'd need OAuth and a RESTful api, then for every single action on torn create a REST endpoint which connects to the Torn's back end servers. They all need to be tested and ensured their working correctly, the amount of work for just the server side implementation is huge. Then there's the client side(just for android), so the client needs to be coded to use each rest call, tested to ensure they're working, then new mobile friendly assets * 3 for the different screen resolutions, test again on multiple devices with different screen sizes. Then there's the iOS version.
All this is why Chedburn said it would cost half a mil and for the effort involved I for one would run a mile from a job offer to make a mobile app for Torn.

I still cannot see the need for any of this.
As it stands now, my iPhone 5 with SAFARI plays the game 100%.
I even play slots which play better and quicker than on my desktop.
I don't mis-click, simple to zoom/scroll. I know when my E will be full - Push notifications really, really wind me up - therefore they are switched off.
So why need an app? I do not agree that the desktop is a goner either, high end games and Office work simply cannot be done with a tablet the same way.
Maybe I am just old.
Edit: Forgot - put your sensitive information into this at your OWN risk.

r+ for the effort. I don't see why you should need anyone's permission to improve on this and charge for it on the app store.... my browser doesn't need permission, right? |
Change for it? Torn is a free game, and it would fit the app would be free too. Of course if the staff told me,
"no we can't hire you, but continue the app and make money however you can" - I might re think how to do this.
By LightningDust [1414939]
Chedburn prefers not to hire people who play torn, reason being they have an idea of what they want and it seems that he gets better results with people who don't play. |
Hiring me would only mean I would build whats already been done on the website, into the mobile app.

Yes it is true that I would love it if I could goto torn.com/api.php?get=energy
and only get back into my browser a number. The fact is that it's still a page request. At the very least, all I would need is for torn to put HTML comments at the top of only a few pages.
!--
150/150
45/45
1000000
ect....
--
Energy, Nerve, money, ect in a comment at the top of the page could allow this app to move away from a hacky environment.

I think the simple matter is that the website should be properly rendered for proper phone browser compatibility in order for mobile users to get the most from the game.
I have a few issues playing via mobile browser, but nothing major.
However, a mobile app is welcome and an excellent addition to the game.

Google Play lists two apps for Torn City. Might have to check this one out later, the main reason I would need a mobile app is for when I am working away and can train my employees and bulk up in the gym. This covers half of that easily enough. |
Make sure its the one from J3 Gamining. better to just search that.
personally, if there was basic functionality for forums, mails, items and attacking, id be very happy.
chrome 1-finger zooming on mobile (clicking) is extremly unreliable. makes it a real pain in the ass.
Opera mini wont load pages, sometimes it will just reload the current page.
in short, i HAAAATE having to zoom and scroll on a mobile browser. i have no idea why so many people have the "close enough is good enough" mindset with torn and mobile browsers.
we should always be striving for the best. and tbh, free or not, so should Ched.

A work or invention that is the result of creativity, such as a manuscript or a design, to which one has rights and for which one may... |
so, by that logic, as Ched has never made a Mobile App for torn, no IP law has been breached. unless of course, ched has previously copyrighted Mobile apps. which....i dont think is possible
or, you could actually work for the MPAA, and in that case, you think if you scream long enough, people will believe you..

What type of phone do you have? What resolution is your phone if you know?
Looks like I should have tested a few different resolutions first, haha it should look a tiny bit better than that, centered, ect.

You can train how many times you want, single times or change the text box and train 400e.
Like I said, if I can get support on this app, much more can be added. This is only a demo for what's possible

Now I need to write this. I wrote it, but retracted it, as I didn't want to offend. Now you are asking for it Pluto.
Xanax_whore:
Forget arguing with Pluto about this, he is so short-sighted/narrow minded it's unbelievable. He has his little perfect world iPhone (that he can't even spell right), clearly showing his passionate love affair with his phone on the forums. So no reason to change or modernize anything, because it's works so and so for him, and that's enough for everyone. All this newfangled app technology is a fad, because with his trusted iPhone he doesn't need Apps at all.
There, said it Pluto.

I think you also have a limited understanding of IP law - trust me when I say that if Ched wants to shut down a paid unofficial torn app then he has an open and shut case, because the app developer would be making money off the back of Ched's copyrighted content.
A dictionary definition does not constitute the boundaries of IP law unfortunately, however much you would like your google fu skills to make it so.
This is getting a little off topic now though - we should probably focus on the work Goober is doing instead (if Ched decides to put the kaibosh on the whole thing then so be it - until then Goober isn't doing any harm with a free unofficial browser-skin app even if it isn't the fully integrated trusted web app some people would like to see).

after using my phone exclusively for over 6mos, and then using a laptop for the past 2weeks, i actually prefer using my phone and mobile torn. it sucks to have to zoom in all the time, and mis clicks are a pain, too. my old phone never had that problem tho. i was using an htc wildfire s, and it auto fit the page properly almost every time. now im on a htc 1x+, and i have to zoom every time. i would definitely give an app a shot, tho i prefer that the mobile version was fixed. im glad to see someone is taking the initiative, as i use my phone more than my laptop, ipod, navigation or house phone. good job and gl

Rekker's point is no less important here though, in theory what he says is accurate also. We cannot stress enough the importance of account security, if you're willing to compromise your own details by giving away account information then it is at your own risk, you cannot just claim 'hacked' and get your stuff given back to you if something happened, it'd just be removed. This is how we deal with those who willingly hand over their account information and lose their accounts because of it.
Whether or not a trusted TC player makes it this is still entirely unofficial and so anything you do on here is entirely at your own risk. This is not something that I would personally trust, not just passwords that could be potentially at risk here I guess? No way of really telling what sort of information could be made accessible to others when you log in here.
Unless the code is available for people to check such things to be sure I cannot recommend this, sorry OP, I'm sure it's lovely, but as someone who has been jailing phishers all week and watching rants about things like mug scripts for months you can understand where I am coming from I'm sure.
I don't intend to spark off an argument with this post, I just wanted to point out a few key bits.

Thank you bogie, like I said in my original post I understand players concerns. If the staff could even just verify (svn read only access?) that I am only here to make torn better, not worse players minds could be set at ease.
I am defiantly willing to chat with staff, figure out what the future holds and proceed from there. There are multiple ways to allow me continue development, my main concern is being able to keep the lights on at my house. Some type of profit has to made for myself in order to keep it updating at a reasonable pase.

So you're saying that Ched is now obligated to throw some coin your way because you have started work on an unsanctioned torn browser skin app?
Or do you already consider yourself hired based on the relatively small amount of work you have done (don't get me wrong - it's a nice try but it's a very long way from being a genuine release candidate in any form).
That really doesn't come off all that well. Not well at all.
p.s. Ambition is fine and the op is to be applauded for it in general, but expectation is another thing entirely and unfortunately desire is not often enough - to be honest I'd rather it if Ched went through a proper hiring process where he could exercise the due diligence that such a position required, rather than hiring the first ambitious young chap who decided they'd try to dabble in a bit of iphone / android api programming and hack an app of sorts together.

His main concern is making money off it. Well at least his heart's in the right place.
On a different note, I'm surprised so many people are willing to give someone their username/password. That's awfully trusting of you.

It's almost guaranteed to be slower - there's an extra layer being added to any server transaction in both directions and in the end without direct trusted access to the game / database servers the "app" will still have to contend with exactly the same issues that players using a browser do now.
Let's be clear that this is not a full app - trusted client server apps with the depth / complexity of torn cost a bomb.
This is closer to the "mobile friendly torn" application that ched mentioned at the end of his edit in the poll - a simple re-skinning of the torn website with limited functionality but still essentially just an exercise in playing torn through a phone browser (albeit a slightly slower one with the extra layer of parsing / reconstruction happening in both phases of each and every transaction).
p.s. I'd suspect the op might be hearing from Ched shortly - he's never been keen on others messing around with his IP, especially in such a visible milieu as the play / app store.
p.p.s. I'm not saying that the op doesn't deserve a pat on the back for throwing this together, but the process described above is exactly that of re skinning the torn website in an app. All requests are being pumped through the website servers in exactly the same way that a browser does and the responses are also being parsed and displayed in the same manner that browsers do it. |

ive got my popcorn, do you?
and this kid monetized the app, as demonstrated above. LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
