Client Setup
#S01 : How to connect to IRC using Torn lightIRC
If you want simplicity, this is the recommended option for you. Simply click 'Chat' on your sidebar. Then near the top of the page, click 'join IRC'. Type in the name you'd like, hit 'Connect' and then you're done. You'll be automatically taken to the Torn chat #lobby.

#S02 : How to connect to IRC using mIRC
If you want to use mIRC simply follow the 12 step process below:

1. Go to this URL for a direct download of the latest version of mIRC:
download.cnet.com/mIRC/3000-2150_4-10001733.html

2. Once downloaded, click the installer and follow it through like any other software installation.

3. After the product is installed, locate the mIRC icon on the desktop or in the start menu and click it. The program will then load and you will be faced with a screen like below:

so0izp.jpg

4. mIRC claims to have a 30 day trial period, however you NEVER have to pay. The software is completely free. Just click continue and another box will appear telling you about the owner of mIRC. Click continue here also.

5. You will then be faced with the mIRC options box. Fill out the Full Name, Email Address and Nickname with your ingame name. In the alternative box enter another name just incase someone is using your name already. After you've done this it should look like so:

fy1uvb.jpg

6. Do NOT click "ok" yet. On the left column click "Servers". This will bring up a new panel of options with a server list. Torn's server is not on this list so we need to add it. Click Add and another box will appear titled "Add Server". Fill it in with the credentials shown below and click "Add":

jq2wrp.jpg

7. Torn appears at the bottom of the server list now. Simply click the "Sort" button to arrange the server list in alphabetical order.

315j4n4.jpg

8. It's still not time to click "ok". On the left menu column again click "Options". You may have different personal preferences to me, however the options I have ticked I recommend (especially Connect on startup!). Most are already ticked by default. The highlighted perform button may be of use to you later on once you are connected to the server and have registered a nickname.

6tcsg2.jpg

9. Finally on the left hand menu again, click the actual text reading "IRC" as shown below. Again another options panel and again most of these options are ticked by default. The ones I have ticked are recommended.

2508bp0.jpg

10. You can now click ok. You will see the white area is divided into two sections. A scrollable section and a small rectangular text box underneath. The rectangular text box is where you do all your typing, the larger area above is where you do all the reading. Type into the text box the line I have below and then press Enter:

309htmx.jpg

11. You are now connected to Torn IRC. Another popup would have appeared titled "mIRC Favourites". I personally don't use this because I see no use, therefore I disable it by unticking both the options highlighted below. I recommend you do the same and then click "Ok" on that popup. You will never see that box again.

1rt6qr.jpg

12. Follow through the rest of the tutorial to familiarise yourself with the rest of the IRC commands enabling you to join channels and chat with your friends and the rest of Torn! Every time you load mIRC from then onwards you should automatically connect to Torn IRC (if you ticked Connect on startup earlier!) every time the program loads so you can instantly start chatting.

#S03 : How to connect to IRC using mibbit
1. Go to www.mibbit.com

2. You will see a green button on the left hand side of the page reading "Launch Mibbit WebChat". Click this.

3. You will then be faced with a form with various options. Firstly, click "server" as circled in red. Then type in the server address as I have below. Your nick is your game name and the channel you preferably want to join is #Lobby. The options crossed out with red you can ignore.

ok98ox.jpg

4. After you've done this, click "Go". It should automatically connect you to Torn IRC and direct you to the #Lobby room where you can chat to the rest of Torn

The Basics
#BA01 : What is the purpose of IRC?
IRC stands for internet relay chat. On the Torn server, we have a network of channels relating to the game and each channel serves its own purpose. Whether you want to chat, have fun and play games, buy or sell or want a room to talk to your faction buddies - IRC is where this becomes achieveable.

#BA02 : How to change your name on IRC
You can change your name by typing this command:

/nick newnick
Example: /nick Teddy

#BA03 : How to join a different channel
There are two more common ways to join channels...

/list
produces a list of channels. Double click the channel name you want to join
/join #channel
Example: /join #myroom

#BA04 : Useful channels that may interest you
#lobby Default channel
#help You can get game related help here
#irchelp If you get stuck with any of these commands, you can get help here
#traders Buy and sell on IRC
#stockmarket Keep track of your stock movement

User Management & Settings
#U01 : How to register your name
Registering a name on IRC allows to you create autojoin lists and become part of channel access lists. To register your name you need to choose a unique and secure password, as well as have a valid email address.

/ns register password email
Example: /ns register il0veIRC teddy@torn.com

#U02 : How to login to your name after registering
It is required you login to your IRC nickname in order to gain access to additional features such as the autojoin list, IRC messaging service (memoserv) and channel creation options. Furthermore, nicknames that are not logged in within 21 days will expire and be deleted.

/ns identify password
Example: /ns identify il0veIRC

#U03 : How to change your password
If you accidentally message a room with your password or doubt the security of your nickname, you can change your password. This requires you to be identified first (#U02).

/ns set password newpassword
Note: "password" is the word password in this case
Example: /ns set password iH4t3IRC

#U04 : How to register MORE names
If you decided to change your name on IRC (#BA02) but didn't want to lose your autojoin list, or you wanted to keep the access levels you have on particular channels - you can group your nickname. This requires you to have a previously registered nick.

/ns group targetnick targetpassword
Note: "targetnick" & "targetpassword" are the credentials for your previously registered nickname.
Example: /ns group Teddy il0veIRC

#U05 : How to add/remove someone to and from your ignore list
By default, the Torn IRC and mIRC client both have ignore/unignore options if you right click on a user's nick in the channel userlist. However, mIRC users especially may find some of these commands useful..

/ignore nickname*!*@* Will ignore anyone with the said nickname
/ignore *!*@hostmask Will ignore anyone with the said hostmask (can be gained from a /whois nick)
/ignore -l Displays your current ignore list
/ignore -r nickname*!*@* Unignores said nickname
/ignore -r *!*@hostmask Unignores said hostmask
/ignore -r Clears entire ignore list

#U06 : How to request a vHost to be assigned to your name
A hostname is an identity given to you by your internet service provider. On IRC you can request what is known as a virtual host (vhost) to mask over your hostname. You must have a registered nickname to do this (#U01/2).

/hs request customize@this.vhost.message
Note: Part before @ (identity) is limited to 10 characters. vhosts must include @ and be separated with periods (.)

#U07 : How to view your access level for all channels
Have you ever wondered what channels you are "staff" in - and still have operator access to? The command below will give you an entire list of these channels and tell you what your access is in them.

/ns alist

#U08 : How to manage your channel autojoin list
An autojoin list is pretty self explanitory. You can join up to 20 of your favourite channels by adding them to this list. This option is restricted to registered users (#U01) and you must be identified (#U02) to use it.

/ns ajoin add #channel Adds said channel (ie #help) to your autojoin list.
/ns ajoin del #channel Deletes said channel from autojoin list
/ns ajoin list View channels on your autojoin list
Note: If the channel you want to add has a password, simply include the password after the channel name like so: /ns ajoin add #channel password

Channel Management & Settings
#C01 : How to create your own channel
To create your own channel, you first need a registered nickname (#U01). When creating a channel, it is important to choose a name you like as you won't be able to change it once it's registered. To register a channel type the command below.

/cs register #channel password description
Note: This password must be unique and NON IDENTICAL to your nickname password. Furthermore, you should not sure this password with another user.
Example: /cs register #TeddysRoom abc123 A room for Teddy's friends.

#C02 : How to add/remove ops to your channel (temporarily)
Granting someone temporary ops will permit them to moderate the channel until they leave or disconnect. To grant someone temporary ops use the following command:

Adding temporary staff
/mode #channel +MODE nick
Example: /mode #TeddysRoom +o Chedburn

Removing temporary staff
/mode #channel -MODE nick
Example: /mode #TeddysRoom -o Chedburn

Note: Look at the access table below for information on MODE.

#C03 : How to add/remove ops to your channel (access list)
This is a slightly more complex method of adding ops to your channel and will allow your staff to have more permanent access (until otherwise removed). The user you wish to add to the access list needs a registered nickname.

Adding or changing somebody's staff access
/cs access #channel add nick LEVEL
Example: /cs access #TeddysRoom add Chedburn 5

Note: The add command can be used to alter someones access to a higher or lower level.

Removing somebody's staff access completely
/cs access #channel del nick
Example: /cs access #TeddysRoom del Chedburn 5

Note: Look at the access table below for information on LEVEL.

5vzjix.jpg

#C04 : How to change the channel topic
The channel topic is the colorful bar that usually heads the channel window. The idea is that the topic advertises your channel by letting users know what the channel is used for, and how it may be of interest to them.

/topic #channel Write what you like here
Example: /topic #TeddysRoom This is Teddy's room. Everybody is welcome!

#C05 : How to permanently ban someone from your channel
If you want to permanently remove someone from you channel, you can add them to the autokick list. Whenever they join from then on, they will be automatically kicked and banned. Furthermore, you can set them to a negative access level which will further restrict them from entering.

/cs akick #channel add nick reason
/cs access #channel add nick -9999

Note: Be sure you remove the users channel ops if they are on the access list.
Example: /cs akick #TeddysRoom add bogie n00b

#C06 : How to transfer channel ownership
If you've lost interest in running a channel and want to let someone else take charge, there is a quick and painless way of giving them full ownership.

/cs set #channel founder nick
Note: The person taking over ownership will need a registered nickname.
Example: /cs set #TeddysRoom founder Chedburn

#C07 : How to set a successor
A successor is similar to a founder. If your personal nickname is removed for any reason, if you have set a successor for your channel this person will automatically receive ownership so the channel doesn't get deleted. It is recommended you choose somebody you trust to be your successor (should anything happen)

/cs set #channel successor nick
Note: The successsor will need a registered nickname.
Example: /cs set #TeddysRoom successor Chedburn

#C08 : How to set channel modes (invite only, p/word protected etc)
You can set various channel modes which will allow you to customise the security and well-being of your channel. This could include colour stripping, password protection, flood protection, badword filtering etc.

Setting a channel mode
/mode #channel +MODE <parameter>
Example: /mode #TeddysRoom +G

Unsetting a channel mode
/mode #channel -MODE
Example: /mode #TeddysRoom -G

Note: To change a mode parameter, just set the mode again. Some modes require parameters to work. Some modes also require parameters in order to be unset.

A full list of channel modes can be found here: webtoman.com/opera/panel/ircdmodes.html . Only modes marked with Unreal IRCd apply to Torn IRC.

#C09 : How to restrict your channel to "authorised" users
If you have a private room, for a faction or friends - you can restrict the room so it only becomes available to members on the channel access list. See #C03 for more info on adding people to your access list.

/cs set #channel restricted on
Note: Replace "on" with "off" to remove this restriction.
Example: /cs set #TeddysRoom restricted on

#C10 : How to remove a user from channel owner access (~)
More often than not, founders entrust owner privileges to other IRC users and often decide against it. The odd thing about the owner access level (9999) is that it can only be removed permanently once a user has disconnected from the server OR they have been logged out of their nick/channel. As you can't force someone to logout their nick,or disconnect them, there is a command that allows you to log them out of your channel. Once entered, they will no longer have any permissions within the channel, providing their access has already been revoked (#C03).

/cs logout #channel nick
Example: /cs logout #TeddysRoom Teddy

Service-Bot Management & Settings
#BO01 : How to (un)assign a service bot to your channel
/bs botlist
This will fetch a list of available bot names. Choose the bot name you'd like in your channel.
/bs assign #channel botnick
Note: These are NOT script bots, and will not run games or !id commands etc.
Example: /bs assign #teddysroom Director

#BO02 : How to enable fantasy mode (!kb, !op etc)
/bs set #channel fantasy on
Example: /bs set #TeddysRoom fantasy on

#BO03 : How to configure kicking for colors, bold, underline etc
/bs help kick

Miscellaneous
#M01 : How to privately message someone
Simply type the following command to open up a separate, private chat window with another user.

/query theirnick
Example: /query Teddy

#M02 : How to add your ID to a channel
Adding your game ID (the number associated with your game name) to an IRC bot will allow other players to identify you in the game. Furthermore, in some channels it could entitle you to win prizes. Here's how you add your ID.

!addid yournick yourid
Note: This command varies from channel to channel so may not be accurate. Furthermore, it will only work in channels with bots that recognise the command.
Example: !addid Teddy 863543

#M03 : Torn IRC Operators & Administrators
Below is the current list of Torn IRC operators and administrators. IRC Administrators should only be contacted regarding abuse complaints or IRC staff issues. Game staff should be your first point of contact for all IRC issues - you can contact us by joining #irchelp

Scripted Bots
#SC01 : How to set up your own scripted bot
Setting up your own scripted bot is far different from assigned one from BotServ. A scripted "bot" is basically someone who has a separate installation of mIRC running, and has loaded scripts in to that installation which can then be executed by other users.
# So, the first step to creating your own bot is to install a completely separate installation of mIRC on to your computer. If your first copy was installed to Program Files by default, install this copy somewhere else.
# After you've installed it, set up this copy as detailed in #S01, only at step 5, choose a nickname for your bot.
# Once you've set up and connected to Torn IRC, you've successfully made yourself a bot. Only now you need to load scripts on to it to make it functional.

#SC02 : How to script your own bot
To load scripts in to your bot, you simply need to copy your script code and paste them in to the mIRC Script Editor under the "Remote" tab. This can be accessed by using the keyboard shortcut, ALT + R.

Note: Before you paste your script, it is adviseable to go to File > New and create a new script document just in case you are pasting in to an existing script.
Now to get scripts for your bot, Plornt has set up an excellent resource in the forums packed with popular and common scripts. You can view these by following this link: http://www.torn.com/forums.php?forumID=14&ID=12633659
Note: You won't be able to execute your own scripts from the same installation. Hence why you install two copies of mIRC.

#SC03 : How to get help with your bot
There are three obvious places to get help with your bot.

#irchelp - the official IRC help channel

#scripting - a privately run channel targeting scripters and bot makers

IRC General Forum - all IRC questions are welcome here
