ched im not quite sure why php calling a database should result in a server reboot. Whats the problem? I mean the real problem? Is there a DB corrupt somewhere? Its clearly and always is a last ditch effort when people start rebooting things. Can you at least say "erm the code is malfunctioning somewhere". Also I dont quite understand why a server reboot will cause lag? If you are using proper loadbalancing techniques then you should be able to loose a full server from the cluster and not have any issues at all.
