The link to verify accounts does not work for me and I have not changed my email account in 4 years...so now what? I go to fed over something that doesn't work that I have no control over?

Really.
Staff have coloured names, and there is a Staff list in the City on top of this.
Why someone whose name is Staff, a non donator and no coloured name would be believable as a member of Staff.
It makes me sad how many people have given up their information.
In all fairness its probably kids that dont frequent the forums that are fooled, any threads Ive seen about them(The messages) the text is always in red and the message is pretty intimidating (or at least would be to a 14 year old). They also tend to target low level accounts so theres a pretty good chance the person that owns the account wouldnt have much experience with real staff so give over the information for fear of getting into trouble. Its not stupidity its just a mix of naivety and fear,
This Is very Important people I know someone who's account got hacked and he had to make another account and start from scratch So never give information to ANYONE otherwise you will most likely have your account Hacked and all your money and items stolen

from a logical point of view, you could just stop users being able to include "staff", "torn" or "*" in their account name and append or prepend a "*" on to staff accounts.

I already understand all that. But for some reason it was a really confusing read. Poor sentence structure, lack of punctuation were most likely the cause of my confusion.
I have no pity for those who fall for this. stupid people will always find a way to stupid away all of their stuff.
What I cant stand however is those who would benefit from others lack of brain power. there are a few players attempting to get really rich really quick, not by scamming a well established player, but by scamming a load of struggling new accounts.
So one guy gets rich and thirty lose interest in the game. I know scamming is legal, but i think that stance needs revision.

From my experience at owning and coding similar games, option 3 is not a good way to inform people. It can cause the server(s) to crash due to the huge amount of in-game mail going out at one time.
There is another way to do it though. If memory serves me correctly, you can send this information to the email accounts that the players signed up with through the mysql database. Pretty much the same way newblets get those George mails after signing up.
