Perhaps I'm wrong here, but isn't "Voting" something you do as a preference? Doesn't it mean that we're Recommending the game to others?
You offer the game for free this is true, but there's 2 sides to that. We play the game for free, (actually at an expense of our time) and without the players, all the programming would be for your own practice. I'm not trying to overrate the players importance, but, without players the game is useless. Look at all the games out there with 15 regular players. Duller than watching paint dry. So while TC is a fairly well programmed, and has moderately good uptime, it's the wealth of players that make the game good.
Personally I don't feel like we have any obligation to recommend the game to anyone if we don't feel it's worth recommending. So offering a prize or incentive to vote really should just be offering compensation for the time it takes is to click our way through.
Because we play the game doesn't mean:
1. We prefer the game more than other
2. We personally feel we should recommend it.
3. That we should stuff the ballot box of a game site with votes for the game we play.
At this point, I think TC is going thru some pretty serious changes. We're seeing a lot of old players leave and new players sign up. Maybe this isn't the time to be rated #1 at the game sites.
you should feel it is your duty to vote. Give something back to Torn City, it is all that we ask.
It's not our duty. What would make this statement sit better would be something more like:
If you like the game, please take the time to let others know about it by voting.
But to say it's our DUTY because you offer the game for free... that's certainly your right to believe, but when you offer something for free, it's just that... free. If we're required to vote for it, then it's not free anymore.
Just my opinion. I promote the game in a number of different ways, tell all my friends about it, have a link to it on my blog site and run TornCityWiki.com. So I think I show my appreciation for the site. As for doing my duty that's limited to doing my best to obey the rules, and be active in the game.
Before people get crusty with me, I did vote at all 3 sites but I wanted to make a point here.
Ched, this is what happens when you say we are thinking 3 mil per level and points and then dont follow through. I know qite a few people were very upset about what was received as compensations. I do agree that you didnt have to give compensations but you never should have thrown an amount out there. I think that is a big chunk of the problem.
I do vote, I do buy donator packs, but maybe you should think about all the people you told to quit whining about you decision an d quit whining yourself because the people who feel you screwed them over are choosing to not vote.
I just voted, but it will be the last time. Why? After-crash compensation was ridiculous, hunters got screwed, many people had almost irrecoverable losses (crime exp, nerve) and nothing was done to help them (a boost in crime exp for everyone online recently would have been much better than any amount of cash)...
Considering all of these factors, then again, why vote? A vote must be DESERVED, not REQUIRED!!!
When I will feel this game will be worthy of my vote, I'll vote again... but for the moment, it's really not the case!
i 100% agree
no offence ched but you put yourself in this hole and then getting mad at us for not voting is just ridiculous

If the incentives suck, people wont vote. Period. Its the same way in every game. If the incentives goto crap then you can expect the voting to follow.
Personally after reading through all this something ched said in a different thread comes to mind... too lazy to actually find it and quote it but was something along the lines of..
Your only selfish and only care about what can benifit yourselves and not the betterment of the game...
While personally not entirely agreeing with everything that chedburn does, or says, that statement pretty much sums up the majority of responses in this thread...
With that said, chedburn doesn't always word things the best way, and doesn't always do things that everyone agrees with. But he does do things for the most part (whether they are done late or not) for the betterment of the entire community, not a portion...
Voting is not a duty (i think the wording is bad and agree with the other users who have pointed this out) but is something that i continue to do, not for the rewards.. i dont gain any points usually from the sites, and not for the tokens, i dont use them .. but for the simple reason that i still do enjoy this game and continue to play, i played through all the trials and problems that torncity has faced and has in the most part overcome and become stronger...
Thats why i vote and why i continue to vote.. Torncity in the most part is a great game, it has throughout its time had some major problems and there was times when even myself wanted to quit completely. Torncity still has a number of areas that need improvement on and slowly but surely things are getting much much better as a whole.. most things done with torncity users are not even aware of, but are major changes to the stability of the game.
sorry for the long post, and sorry if you feel offended by what i have to say.
Vote because you want to see the site grow and improve, not for any rewards you may or may not like or use.
As a donator, I guess it isn't my 'duty' to vote. That's good, because I won't be voting. There are still bugs that aren't being fixed, like education days. I really like this game but am not going to vote for others to play it!
staff is well aware that there is still issues with the game, but geez, give the coders time to fix stuff. They do have real lives they also have to deal with and dont get paid to do this.

and it's not like the rewards are that big a deal , they certainly haven't made me rich or get ahead of other players that don't vote, but then again i'm a marathon style player and not a sprinter so i'm in no big rush .. i think i'd still vote even if there were no rewards just for the satisfaction of seing tc as nº 1 week after week ..
About this thread:
Overall i'd say this thread was badly timed and the 1st post too "guilt trippy " .. a true marketing nightmare ..
especially so because people will only get the rewards at the end of the week so you can't expect to have so many instant Sunday votes now as you had before, however, i could almost bet you'll see a rise in voting during the rest of the week up until the next weekend ..
my guess is you checked out the votes and saw a drastic drop in relation to previous Sundays ... but the fact is you changed the system last week, people are still adapting and as such you jumped the gun (so to say) based on too little comparative information ..
ched, have you failed to realize that most of the players vote for the rewards? When you take away the good rewards, you take away the votes.
§² LeukyBear , how is voting better for the game?
§² LeukyBear , how is voting better or the game?
think about it ... are you more likely to play a game that's nº1 based on voting sites or one that's nº10 or even one that nobody has heard of ?
it helps bring in new players .. they are the lifeline that's kept TC going .. if you'll check the player list for ID's under 60k you'll see that there aren't that many of us .. older players tend to quit and if no new ones enter then the game dies
i fell nothing but akes and pains weres my compansation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

didn't ched just recently get rid of all of the low level players that did not play anymore because it was slowing the game down?
